Handmade Jewellery by Lucie Houdková from Prague

Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)

My name is Lucie Houdková. I was born in Brno, it´s the second largest city of the Czech Republic. I studied Academi of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and I graduated two years ago. I attended studio of Metal and Jewellery which was renamed K.O.V. (Concept, Object, Meaning). My specialization is jewellery and design.

What inspires you in general?
My inspiration comes from natural forms and their structures.

Where are you based?
I work and live in Prague.

What is it like to be a young designer in your city/country?
It is rather hard when you start because if you want to show your work, you must participate in various design events but they're expensive for young people. Either you give it up or you are in luck.

What city do you find inspiring?
Prague

What is the concept behind your latest jewerllery collection?
In fact, now I'm just preparing new collection for exhibition in Milano, and these jewelleries reflect my feeling from existence.

Describe your collection in three words.
Growth. Limitations. Bondage.

Did you always wanted to work in the field of fashion?
No, actually I preferred fine arts more.

Who is your favorite fashion designer?
Alexander McQueen.

What is so far your greatest experience in your 'fashion' career?
It was last year when I had the exhibition with my three friends in Munich during Schmuck. For me it was very exciting to meet and speak with people from all around the world who are interested in jewellery. The similar feeling I had in New York during the following exhibition. It was different but one of the greatest experience in my life to this time.

What is on your music list while you are doing your creation?
The song ‘The First Cut Is The Deepest’.

What is the latest thing you bought for yourself?
Chocolate today.

What can we expect from you in the future?
I hope to bring out more jewellery in the future.

When and why did you decided to focus on jewellery design?
I decided long time ago, I can´t say exactly when because I don´t know it. Maybe it was since the first time when I picked up the tongs and wanted to do something nice.

Can you describe in brief what your first piece of jewellery look like and how did you form the idea to create it at that time?
My first piece of jewellery was a necklace made from wire and a lot of gemstone which I stuck on the necklace with superglue. I made it when I was 10 years old or may be younger and I really wouldn't do this one again at that time.

As you ever studied in Academi Arts, Architecture and Design, is there any possibility of getting inspirations from architecture designs while making new collections of jewellery?
Yes of course, many of students were inspired by architecture. For example, at the school there were very interesting lectures which can inspire students.

Are all of your works made by hand?
Yes, I try to remind for something what isn´t handmade but I can´t.

From your perspectives, can jewellery play a special role to show one’s personality, compared with clothes, shoes or make-ups?
Yes, sure. Certain jewellery can be made-to-measure for one person and together with clothes, shoes and the like will represent the personality.
