Maarten van Mulken presents VOID

Maarten van Mulken, a fashion designer from Limburg, develops (mostly) women’s collections.
Has has participated in various FASHIONCLASH events With his collection Kill Your Darlings, presented at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2017, he has won the Radikal Fashion Film Award by Pascal Baillien.

Maarten likes to create worlds trough fashion by trying to get back old techniques that people have forgotten, while at the same time moving forward to the future and telling a story with his creations.
His new collection 'VOID' interprets the theme of 2018 FASHIONCLASH Festival, by exploring the sense of emptiness experience by people, a void that used to be filled by religion. The collection aims to fill this void, to give people an everyday armour against it.

Maarten's collection will be presented at the Show Programme on Saturday the 16th of June at the SAM-Decofabriek. You can get your tickets here.

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?
I’ve always been fascinated by art and design because they can distract but also attract you to do things and to lose yourself in a way. For me it’s not just fashion but every discipline that makes us curious again and lets us to think further than just ‘normal’ life. Fashion design was for me the best outcome in this. It’s starts with the person that wears the clothing, for me fashion starts at the base from where you can create complete worlds around it.

Maarten van Mulken - Serbia Fashion Week

Dutch fashion talent, Maastricht based designer Maarten van Mulken has been invited to represent to represent FASHIONCLASH Festival at Serbia Fashion Week.
Maarten showed his collection 'Kill Your Darlings' that he presented at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2017 edition.
"They call deleting ideas ‘killing your darlings’, but often good ideas are being cancelled instead of the weakest. The general idea is getting dumbed-down to make it more commercial and gain more money. This to me refers to fashion being dead, because it’s all about just selling as much as possible these days.
Fashion to me is not dead, it just needs to change into a new form and people need to be encouraged to pursue their ideals/ideas instead of killing them."
Taking place in Novi Sad, Serbia Fashion Week is one of the biggest fashion events in Eastern Europe. each edition designers from all over the world are showing alongside national designers. The event takes place from 20 - 27 November in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia's second largest city in the Vojvodina region. Novi Sad is elected to be European Capital of Culture in 2021. Since few years FASHIONCLASH collaborates with Serbia Fashion Week by means of exchanging designers. http://serbiafashionweek.com

FASHIONCLASH Festival preview at Catwalk Maastricht

FASHIONCLASH Festival preview performance at Catwalk Maastricht.

Today, the audience in the city of Maastricht experienced a small tasty teaser of to expect during the festival. In cooperation with SESSIBON and MAFAD the newest local talents presented their work at Mosae Forum and Entre Deux shopping areas.

The displayed red outfits are designed by 3-D year students from the Body department at MAFAD. The red represented the urge to protest and speak out. Does Fashion Make Sense? was the question posed while parading among the streets dominated by fast fashion shops.
The statement was not there to judge the people but mostly to engage a dialogue in the streets, afteral the street is the biggest display of 'fashion'.
Moreover the performance happend to give voice to the new generation of designers and the eight MAFAD students: Ashley Luypaers, Max Niereisel, María Voth Velasco, Michelle Cornelissen, Dana Lipka, Julina Bezold, Natalia Rumiantseva and  Empar Juanes Sanchis

Fashion Makes Sense, the 9th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival will take place from June 29 till July 2 in Maastricht.

“FASHIONCLASH 2017: Future of Fashion”

24 March – 23 April 2017, in Chengdu, China

In March and April of this year, Maastricht-based interdisciplinary fashion platform FASHIONCLASH, jointly with Chinese partners Punch Me, Cross Lab and Dutch-Chinese organization About Asia will introduce “FASHIONCLASH 2017: Future of Fashion” in Chengdu.
After a successful first exhibition of FASHIONCLASH in China (2015), as part of an exchange programme between the cities of Maastricht (Netherlands) and Chengdu (Sichuan, China), FASHIONCLASH now presents a larger, more comprehensive, and complete story at the newly opened “Future Center” in downtown Chengdu from 24 March until 23 April.

‘Future of Fashion’ is a multidisciplinary exhibition composed out of work of more than 30 emerging designers and artists from The Netherlands and Flanders. The exhibition represents a broad spectrum of fashion design aesthetics, visions and various approaches to fashion. The presented work stands out for its concept, experimental material and textile, innovative shapes and tailoring. In addition to fashion the exhibition features screenings of interdisciplinary fashion films and performances. Among the participants there are award winning designers like Marlou Breuls and Nikki Duijst, avant-garde designers’ collective Das Leben Am Haverkamp and promising theatre makers like Lotte Milder and Milou van Duijnhoven. The selection of participants is an eclectic mix of designers that graduated from the top schools such as AMFI, ArtEZ Arnhem, MAFAD, KABK, Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and Theatre Academy Maastricht.
FASHIONCLASH gathered a team of theatre performers that will bring the exhibition alive. Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck created an overall concept that serves as a platform to connect the physical space of the exhibition with performance space and engage interactions with the audience.

STEVEN VANDERYT
Partners
In collaboration with the Chinese cultural initiative Punch Group and their cultural festival “PunchMe Art Festival”, FASHIONCLASH meets west China for the second time. The exhibition will be staged in ‘Future Center’, an unfinished raw space within a building that perfectly fits the spirit of the new generation designers and artists who are redefining the future with their visions. ‘Future of Fashion’ creations will temporarily find their home in this space and inspire the audience of the potential that lays ahead. Anything is possible! Like in a labyrinth FASHIONCLASH invites visitors to wander and get lost in imagination of the future fashion makers. The Chinese showcases of FASHIONCLASH are developed and initiated in close collaboration with About Asia; a Dutch-Chinese promoter of cultural and creative industries in west China.

FASHIONCLASH x Joelle Boers x The Dutch

Maastricht has a great new hot spot, The Dutch, a contemporary lifestyle hotel with a quirky retro style. FASHIONCLASH teamed up with The Dutch not only for the 8th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival but the collaboration provided a platform for our talented local designer and entrepreneur Joelle Boers. The Dutch commissioned print and fashion Joelle Boers to design a mini collection for The Dutch. The collection features t-shirs, backpacks, jackets and trouwers in various prints also designed by the designer.

The pieces can be bought at The Dutch.

The Dutch is a lifestyle hotel situated in a town house in the district of Wyck, which is known for its authentic shops, bars and restaurants.
Each guest room is individually designed and features modern facilities. These include air-conditioning, a comfy bed with fluffy pillows, a flat screen TV with over a 100 channels, in room coffee and tea, room service from our friends at Harry’s, a complimentary minibar and sufficient power outlets for all your mobile devices. Enjoy a gin & tonic in the Lobby-Bar and meet up with the locals or have a free cappuccino or espresso in the Hangout where you can work, play games or relax.  The hotel does not serve a traditional breakfast as it is surrounded with many great breakfast spots. It does provide a daily complimentary breakfast bag as a healthy start of the day.

C3:Diversity - Day 2

C3:Diversity Project ended yesterday with a public presentation at Centre Céramique. Three teams, each consisting out of one Dutch and one London designer, presented the results of their two day collaboration.
The participating designers where given the challenge to create a concept related to the theme of Diversity. It is fair to conclude that the pitch had no winner but in stead they are all winners after their strong proposals and innovative ideas. The short-term project that took place just two days proved the importance and relevance of such encounters which enable designers not only to collaborate but also to research new ideas that could contribute to a sustainable development of the fashion industry, their personal development but most of al to a better well being. That is exactly what FASHIONCLASH mission is, to organize encounters that will challenge fashion with aim to contribute to a better world.

The presentation was a display of not only new ideas but also new friendships. All participants reflected that the process of the collaboration is as important as the end result and expressed their desire to continue. The conclusion of the project is basically that this is just the begging.

C3:Diversity is a social design project in which the visions of Made2Measure (Maastricht University), Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design (MAFAD), Forza Fashion House Maastricht (FFH), FASHIONCLASH Festival, London College of Fashion - Official (LCF) and 6 different designers (3 from Maastricht, 3 from London) connect, collaborate and create. Together with Made2Measure and London College of Fashion a new platform is provided for creativity, knowledge and research. A platform in which fashion is placed in a social context. The aim if this project is to stimulate the creative industries, to connect Maastricht and London, and to build a lasting relationship with creative minds, entrepreneurs and institutes around the world.

Participants:
From London: Bella Gonshorovitz, Michelle Muirhead and Carmen Ludwig
From Maastricht: Victoria Sophie Keller, Maarten van Mulken and Ebby Port

C3:Diversity took place in the context of MCCCI Conference, a two-day event on the cultural and creative industries. The first day, Monday September 26, will have an academic focus and is organised by Made2Measure(Maastricht University) in collaboration with FMA. During this day, young scholars in the field of finance and investment in creative ventures are invited to present their research. The second day, Tuesday September 27th is focused more toward practitioners in the cultural and creative field, artists and students. To make this day distinct during the conference, it has been named ‘Everyone is an Artist’. The organisation of this day is a collaboration between Made2Measure and The Artist and the Others.

Designers look back to the past but also dare to speculate about the future. From this perspective designers are shaping the future of the shape of things to come. What is the role of our cultural heritage in a constantly changing world? How are new generation designers dealing with their cultural heritage (ancestry and traditions) in a globalized world where everything seems to be reachable and in which fashion is dominated by Fast Fashion chains and mass-production? Where do you come from, where do you go?’

Ebby Port at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

Meet Ebby Port, one of our talented local designers at FASHIONCLASH Festival.
Ebby Port is born in Tilburg but moved to Geleen (Limburg) where she feels more like home.
After studying in Rotterdam and Brussels Ebby decided to live in the area that makes her the happiest.
So now she shares a studio in Sittard with a close friend, Alexander Claessen. Ebby has been designing clothes since 10 years now, since she had her first sewing class.

How would you describe your work ?
For me my work is always about freedom in a way, or/and a reflection of the time we live in. I get inspired by various aspects of life. But it is always very personal. It is about emotions, what I see around me and the world turing around. I use silkscreen printing technique to develope my fabrics. For me this is a way to express my thought and I enjoy to use this very physical technique. It feels like sculpting in a way.
Have you presented your work before?
I have shown at FASHIONCLASH Festival already too times now.

What do you aspire to be?
I aspire to be a good person and to help others.

What is your most name worthy achievement up to now in relation to fashion ?
My most worthy achievement in relation to fashion is spread out in different moments, it is the time I see someone wearing my design with love and that for a moment I forget it is my design. Another moment is when I take off the silkscreen window of the fabric right after printing and the color combination suprises me. Another worthy achievement is our beautiful studio, everytime, if it is in the morning or at night I feel so happy and grateful to be there.
