Mukashi Mukashi by Birutė Mažeikaitė

Photographer: Fredrik Altinell
Mukashi Mukashi is a label by Lithuanian Birutė Mažeikaitė. Focusing on sustainable clothing, in 2017 she won the 'Fashion Makes Sense Award', earning her sponsorship for her new collection 'Animus',  a collection that explores the battle between wanting to be original and wanting to fit in.

Mukashi Mukashi will present her collection 'Animus' at the Show program on Saturday 16th of June at the SAM-Decorfabriek. Get your tickets here.

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?
I was born after Soviet Union crumbled, but my family spent most of their lives in it. Since there was deficit for almost everything, in order to be stylish, my parents did a lot of clothes themselves. During my early childhood the economy in Lithuania was still developing and I ended up doing a lot of things for myself too. I would get inspired and spend all night doing something that I wanted to wear to school the next day. I kept doing the same during my university years while studying psychology. And at some point I understood that the way I get excited about it is special and I want to do this for a living.

Why did you choose fashion?
I see myself as a creative person, designing makes me happy. I didn’t have a formal drawing education to get into art universities, but I was also scared to try. I even finished bachelor of Psychology, but it didn’t feel right. I kept drawing during my lectures. At some point I realized that I will regret if I don’t pursue design. Trial and error. But once I tried it, I knew I made the right decision.

What would you say are your main achievements in your career?
Winning FASHIONCLACH Fashion Makes Sense Award and becoming finalist of International Talent Support Contest are two most memorable achievements. Landing a certain kind of job is always good and exciting, but to me, memories related to my artwork are much more dear and precious. As a young artist struggling to make it, this kind of outside appreciation is very nurturing. I know that my brand is very young, but it is a precious product of my imagination and I am very proud of it as well. I am excited to see where it will go.

What are your sources of inspiration?
I think my collections are quite different from one another and I take inspiration from many diverse things that are important for my own world at a current time. I wouldn’t even know what will inspire me next, I feel that it is important to keep my options broad and see where that takes me.

Why did you decide to participate in FASHIONCLASH 2018? What are your expectations?
I always wanted to participate in FASHIONCLASH, because I feel like this festival explores a broader spectrum of creativity in fashion. It is always very gratifying to show my works after working so hard to materialize them from thoughts. I am looking forward for people to see it as well.

Studio Kiekebos at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

Fotografie: Olga Simonenko
Charlotte Kiekebos is a young promising designer, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, who will present her new collection at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015. From a very young age, she was fascinated by design and graphic arts. In 2013, she graduated from the Fashion Design Department at HKU in Utrecht. Recently, she has created her own fashion label ‘Studio Kiekebos’.

Q&A with the designer Charlotte Kiekebos:

How would you describe your work? What is your technique?
My work is influenced by the basic rules and codes of fashion design. However, my objective is to create a new atmosphere by manipulating the basic rules of design, e.g. by adding detracting or combining elements. This perspective is soundly reflected in all ‘Studio Kiekebos’ designs and it creates a new reactionary experience. In principle, I prefer to place my designs within a decor, in which I add abstract and graphic elements. During the design process I use Moulage, a technique that creates shapes with fabric on the human body.

Freya Proudlock

Photographer: Mitchell McLennan
Let us introduce you to Frey Proudlock, an English knitwear designer, who recently moved to Amsterdam. Her collection will be presented at the fashion show. Freya grew up in London and completed a degree in Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles in Nottingham. Her work explores stitch and pattern through the use of experimental techniques in both fine and chunky gauges.

Hello, Freya! What inspires you in general?
Colours, textures and structures. I enjoy looking at other cultures and their take on design.

What place or city do you find inspiring?
London, Amsterdam and other major cities. I enjoy visiting galleries and exhibitions. Being around creativity and design inspires and motivates me.

What attracts you about the FASHIONCLASH platform?
It’s always nice to be able to showcase a collection in a new way to a new audience. Seeing the collection in new contexts opens up the possibilities of my practise.

What is the concept behind your latest collection?
"Modern Japan is a strangely familiar country which, through its own ambivalent exoticising of the West, has at once inflected, resisted and reversed the binaries of orientalism." (N. Perry in Hyperreality and Global Culture).
Cultures are evolving, merging and borrowing different cultural attributes from one another, which has become more apparent and widespread since the growth of globalisation. Cultures are of course dynamic rather than static and will naturally change and develop when they interact with each other. I researched into both Japanese and British culture taking inspiration from traditional fashion and textile influences. I don’t think of my collection as being solely conceptual, this was the starting idea and hopefully the collection developed into being something autonomous.

Daniel Ramos Obregon

Photographer: Jorge Perez Ortiz / Model: Lukasz Przytarski
Today we have the pleasure to introduce you to Daniel Ramos Obregon. Daniel is a Colombian artist and designer who has specialised in body ornamentation. He will present his work at the FASHIONCLASH Exhibition.

Hello Daniel! What is your field of specialisation?
Hi! I specialise in body ornamentation; jewellery, sculptural pieces and performance props.

Where are you based?
I’ve currently moved back to Colombia from London for a couple of months, but I have some upcoming projects around Europe so I think I will be moving around for a while.

What inspires you in general?
Human behaviour, the embodiment of the different facets of the ‘self’ and their expression on the way we move, act and express our selves.

What place or city do you find inspiring?
Any place that has a rich culture and warm-hearted people will always be inspiring to me. When I was on my early teenage years I was fascinated by Japanese culture and had the opportunity to travel around Japan. I can’t wait for the opportunity to go back.

What is it like to be a young artist in your city/country?
Colombia is undergoing an exponential growth in many different ways and I think there are many spaces opening within fashion and other creative fields. It’s very exciting as a young artist/designer to be part of it.

What attracts you about the FASHIONCLASH platform?
I consider my last collection as “wearable art objects” that sit somewhere in between the context of fashion, sculpture and performance. I think FASHIONCLASH is exploring this convergence of disciplines within the fashion realm and it feels like the exhibition space has been tailor made for people like me to show our work.

"Plùs que ma vìe" by Andrea Lazzari, menswear from Italy

Preview of the Labyrinth collection
Meet Andrea Lazzari! He is 22 years old and comes from Venice, Italy. He specializes in menswear and his brand, Plùs que ma vìe, is based in Mestre, next to Venice. Andrea Lazzari will be presenting his collections during the fashion show and the designer market.

What inspires you in general?
My inspiration starts within myself. All the things that come through my mind are then assimilated with art and the world that surrounds me.

What place or city do you find inspiring?
If I were to say a European city, I’d say Copenhagen. On another continent, it would have to be New York. If I were to say a particular place, I would say my room and its silence.

What is it like to be a young designer in your city/country?
People that surround me are very curious and interested in what I do. My work and the choices I make are often regarded as a reference point.
