FASHIONCLASH Chengdu 2017: Future of Fashion

FASHIONCLASH, jointly with Chinese partners Punch Me, Cross Lab and Dutch-Chinese organization About Asia presented “FASHIONCLASH 2017: Future of Fashion” in Chengdu (China).
The opening weekend contained several performances by Lotte Milder, Mami Izumi, Anthony van Gog and Milou van Duijnhoven. The scenography and art direction is created in cooperation with Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck.

After a successful first exhibition of FASHIONCLASH in China (2015), as part of an exchange programme between the cities of Maastricht (Netherlands) and Chengdu (Sichuan, China), FASHIONCLASH now presented a larger, more comprehensive, and complete story at the newly opened “Future Center” in downtown Chengdu from 24 March until 23 April.

‘Future of Fashion’ is a multidisciplinary exhibition composed out of work of more than 30 emerging designers and artists from The Netherlands and Flanders. The exhibition represents a broad spectrum of fashion design aesthetics, visions and various approaches to fashion. The presented work stands out for its concept, experimental material and textile, innovative shapes and tailoring. In addition to fashion the exhibition features screenings of interdisciplinary fashion films and performances.

Among the participants there are award winning designers like Marlou Breuls and Nikki Duijst, avant-garde designers’ collective Das Leben Am Haverkamp and promising theatre makers like Lotte Milder and Milou van Duijnhoven. The selection of participants is an eclectic mix of designers that graduated from the top schools such as AMFI, ArtEZ Arnhem, MAFAD, KABK, Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and Theatre Academy Maastricht. FASHIONCLASH gathered a team of theatre performers that will bring the exhibition alive. Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck created an overall concept that serves as a platform to connect the physical space of the exhibition with performance space and engage interactions with the audience.

Designers/artists/performers:

Performance and Scenography
Especially for the ‘Future of Fashion’, FASHIONCLASH gathered a team of theatre performers to develop performances that will bring the exhibition to life. Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck created an overall concept that serves as a platform to connect the physical space of the exhibition with performance space and engage interactions with the audience.

“The White Curtain Labyrinth” scenography concept designed by Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck for Future of Fashion, explores the idea of perceiving from a fixed perspective. On the one hand creating a highly aesthetic framed space with using white pleated curtains and on the other hand visualizing a playful deconstructed space. Embracing the existing space and translating it to a performative spatial exhibition.

VERWEVEN 2016 by Nina Willems

VERWEVEN  2016 by Nina Willems
Share the story behind your outfit!
Verweven - Trailer 2015 from Verweven on Vimeo.

Clothes are a very personal thing; we wear them directly to our naked skin, and are part of the way we show ourselves to the world.

What is the story behind the clothes YOU wear? What do they tell us about who you are, and what memories and emotions do they hold for you? In this installation, you can share your story with the rest of us!  You will be interviewed, and a short film will be made about your outfit of today and the story behind it.  Big or small, funny or sad, every story is worth sharing.
So don't be shy, don't hesitate and share!

Filming your own short film will take about 10 - 15 minutes.
Within an hour, you can see your own short film on one of the screens on the outside

Verweven is part of the Heritage exhibition at  SAMdecorfabriek
Open 1 July (18:30 — 23:00)
2 July (16:00 — 23:00)

KAROLINA SIARKOWICZ at FASHIONCLASH Exhibition 2015

Today we would like to introduce to our FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015 Exhibition participant - Karolina Siarkowicz. Karolina lives in Warsaw, Poland and except being fashion design intern and student, she does great illustrations. In June, she will expose her gender-focused drawings, named "GENDER? TAKE HOMOS AWAY FROM ME" which depict the extreme visions on the term 'gender' in polish society.

Get to know Karolina by reading our short interview with her.

How would you define fashion?
For me the meaning of word fashion changes with every new experience in this industry. Sometimes I don’t want to continue my fashion work anymore, and sometimes I am able to sacrifice a lot for it. I think that the experience is hugely influence by the people you are surrounded with. Currently I am in a group of designers and artists, who are creating from the heart. Fashion is still some kind of riddle for me – I treat it like CSI: Miami, Crime Scene Investigation: Miami. I believe, that there will be still many moments in my life, when I will be fed up with fashion industry, but if someone steped in fashion once, it is nearly impossible to leave it behind.

What does your collection try to communicate (what is about)?
My illustrations show the visions of my friends on gender. Before I started working on the pieces I have been collecting their interpretations and illustrated them. To be honest, it was very difficult for me to interpret the modern concept of the word "gender", which now has many meanings. In my country, the word gender has been demonized by the media and above all by the church as Poland is a country with strong believer it got very negative connotation. In my illustrations I got inspired by music video of Perfume Genius “Queen”, refereed to the ancient mythology, equality in fashion and old photography of transvestite, which my friend shared with me.

How did you find out about FASHIONCLASH?
I found out about FASHIONCLASH through FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland. My friend from the Netherlands encouraged me to move forward and make a step by participating at the festival.

Schaffenskraft by Daphne Hobbelen

Daphne Hobbelen is a Dutch artist who takes her inspiration from Munne, an artist that developed an interdisciplinary approach to art. Munne had the habit to wear overalls and store them in boxes for later use. Daphne got the idea to re-use those textiles and give them a new life. Her label Schaffenskraft (Creating's force) shows that recycling textile can lead to unexpected creations. Daphne will present Schaffenskraft at the FASHIONCLASH exhibition.

Yoni Lefévre

Preview of Yoni's work

Dutch designer Yoni Lefévre focuses on the visual communication of a message in a social context in her work. Her collection will be presented during the exhibition and aims to change our understanding of aging. Unfortunately, she won’t be present herself as she will be travelling in Indonesia and Australia!

Hi Yoni! What inspires you in general?
I’m always inspired by documentaries, both movies and photo documentaries, about honest and pure stories of people’s lives. It’s the little things in life and the story behind an image that’s worth documenting.

What place or city do you find inspiring?
I lived a little while in London and I thought the community aspect of this city was very inspiring to see. They stimulate a lot of small interventions and social organizations that help the area. I believe that change starts locally.

She mainly focused on social issues and especially beauty and body cultures. Her collection will be presented during the exhibition.

Hello Bora! What inspires you in general?
Our behaviour in normal life and in public.

What place or city do you find inspiring?
South Korea and its Cosmetic Surgery culture, on which I am now working.

What attracts you about the FASHIONCLASH platform?
I’ve mainly worked on interior design and object design, but I consider FASHIONCLASH as the platform that can bring a lot of freedom in fashion. I would love to share some ideas about the themes of “age” and beauty with some inspiring people.

Georgia Xanthe Dorey

Georgia Xanthe Dorey is an English textile designer. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2013 with an MA in printed textiles.

Hello, Georgia! Where are you based?
I live between London and the rural English countryside where my studio is based.

What inspires you in general?
Day-to-day use of texture, colour, shape and combinations that I see all around me.

What is it like to be a young artist in your country?
Exciting, hard and lonely.

What attracts you about the FASHIONCLASH platform?
That it represents an exciting moment in a designer’s career. The work on show has not lost its sense of excitement; the FASHIONCLASH platform captures new ideas and a new way of thinking.

The FASHIONCLASH Exhibition is curated under the theme of ‘Age’. How does your creation relate to this year’s theme?
‘Wrap’ is a series of cloths suitable for wrapping all manner of bodies, ages and objects, which provide protection and adornment. My work is an exploration into the human relationship with cloth and shape. Each cloth can be interpreted by the individual, regardless of age, gender or ability; each cloth can function in a unique way brought to life by the individual.

Audio > Vision, Stefanie Barz
Picture: Florian Penke/ Model: Dina

Hello Stefanie! What inspires you in general?
It can be anything, but I am particularly interested in phenomena of culture and environment, so mainly people and nature. The source of inspiration is very important, as it is the starting point of my working process. I develop the whole concept around it. Theoretical aspects and thoughts are associated with pictures that provide me with ideas for the colours and the forms. My latest collection is in that sense an unusual experiment: I got inspired by music and by my favourite songs that I then transformed into fashion – seeing by listening.

Shana Teugels

Today we have the pleasure to introduce you to Shana Teugels, a Belgian contemporary jewelry designer. She will present her work at the exhibition.

Bohemian Rock, Shana Teugels
Hello, Shana! What inspires you in general?
Nature and everything that’s faking it.

What place or city do you find inspiring?
I’d say a toy shop.

What is it like to be a young artist in your city/country?
It’s fun and frustrating at the same time.

The FASHIONCLASH exhibition is curated under the theme of “Age.” How does your creation relate to this year’s theme?
I feel like a child playing with different materials and ideas, and some of them refer to me being a young girl. There is no age to creating and playing around.

Daniel Ramos Obregon

Photographer: Jorge Perez Ortiz / Model: Lukasz Przytarski
Today we have the pleasure to introduce you to Daniel Ramos Obregon. Daniel is a Colombian artist and designer who has specialised in body ornamentation. He will present his work at the FASHIONCLASH Exhibition.

Hello Daniel! What is your field of specialisation?
Hi! I specialise in body ornamentation; jewellery, sculptural pieces and performance props.

Where are you based?
I’ve currently moved back to Colombia from London for a couple of months, but I have some upcoming projects around Europe so I think I will be moving around for a while.

What inspires you in general?
Human behaviour, the embodiment of the different facets of the ‘self’ and their expression on the way we move, act and express our selves.

What place or city do you find inspiring?
Any place that has a rich culture and warm-hearted people will always be inspiring to me. When I was on my early teenage years I was fascinated by Japanese culture and had the opportunity to travel around Japan. I can’t wait for the opportunity to go back.

What is it like to be a young artist in your city/country?
Colombia is undergoing an exponential growth in many different ways and I think there are many spaces opening within fashion and other creative fields. It’s very exciting as a young artist/designer to be part of it.

What attracts you about the FASHIONCLASH platform?
I consider my last collection as “wearable art objects” that sit somewhere in between the context of fashion, sculpture and performance. I think FASHIONCLASH is exploring this convergence of disciplines within the fashion realm and it feels like the exhibition space has been tailor made for people like me to show our work.
