"Garbage-to-wear" by Gunnar Hämmerle

Gunnar's inspiration

What is your name? Gunnar Hämmerle.

Where and what did you study and when did you graduate? I studied business management at LMU Munich and graduated 1998. After that, I went to film school HFF, also in Munich. There, I graduated 2003.

How did your experience with blogging started? Why a blog? I started blogging by the end of 2006. First, it was just a fun project. I wanted to take pictures of people and a street style blog gave me a good reason to do so. I love the idea of blogging because it is such a great way to share your work with the whole world. And it doesn't cost anything to start... except your ideas and time.

Where does your inspiration come from? From here and now. I love to be thrown in a situation and then work with it. My approach is rather spontaneous than conceptual.

Marie-Lisah Hermkens

What is your name? Marie-Lisah Hermkens

What is the name of your label? I don’t own a label yet. But when I am going to start one it will probably be just “Marie-Lisah”.

Where did you study and when did you graduate? Last January I graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. I graduated with my collection “Omdat iedereen het doet…”. This is the collection that I will be showing in June (during FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011).

What inspires you as a designer? I guess my inspiration/fascination is always coming from my life and the people in my life. I try to get as much information as possible from the people around me or about certain subjects. There’s no coincidence in my work, it’s a systematic way of working and finding order in the information I collect. So my inspiration is practically everywhere, but the way of finding a system to get and process information is of a greater value.

Unconventional Wieteke

What is your name? My name is Wieteke Ilse Opmeer

What is the name of your label? The name of my label is also Wieteke Opmeer, nice and simple.

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I studied "3D design" at the Art academy of Utrecht (HKU) and I graduated in 2008.

What inspires you as a designer? I get inspired by simple things that seem effortless. The ones that you think "why didn't I think of it?". I like to think of designing as I think of cooking. Just a few simple ingredients in the right balance usually make the greatest tasting dishes.

Preparations for 'staindress' project: dyeing samples and coloring substance (FASHIONCLASH likes!)

Ellis Biemans

What is your name? Ellis Biemans

What is the name of your label? Ellis Biemans

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I studied at fashion & design at AMFI- and I graduate in June 2009.

What inspires you as a designer? The human body inspires me in the first place: the movements of the body and how to use and shape unusual materials as a body adornment. Additionally, in nature you can find beautiful shapes and colors, Im in love with color pallets, combining the right unusual colors together can define a whole new concept.

What is the name of your label? Manon Boertien

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I graduated in 2009 from the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) in fashion design

What inspires you as a designer? Nowadays everyone looks for happiness and the truth in his own way. However, in the past people lived in a community where everyone had a fixed place and role. Happiness and truth was to be found trough God and the family.

Today, everyone is an individual who is detached from the unshakable ties of the past and determines his own life. We can make our own choices and decide for ourselves how to fill our life with happiness and truth. It’s this behavior of people searching for truth and happiness that fascinates me.

Karishma Shahani क श

Karishma'scollection in progress

What is your name? Karishma Shahani

What is the name of your label?
KARISHMA SHAHANI (LABEL क श)

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I graduated from the London College of Fashion, University of the Arts, London with a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design Technology June in 2010, before which I completed my BA(Hons) in Economics from Pune, India in 2007.

What inspires you as a designer? My surroundings. Influences are immense from the homeless person on the road, to cultural images across borders, my inspirations come from everyday things, anything that catches my eye, captures my imagination. It is just about falling in love with what I see. I am obsessed with collecting things, whether it is interesting pieces from travel or found objects they form a large inspirational database alongside a lot of photography of all things beautiful.

Who is your favorite designer? Why? There are many – Dries Van Noten for his beautiful cultural aesthetic in a very contemporary context. Manish Arora for the bold use of colour and textures. Christian Lacroix for how he puts pieces together with such contrasting qualities to make them look effortlessly classic. Issey Miyake for his innovative simplicity. Prada for the sheer respect the brand demands.

What can you bring to FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? Contemporary Indian sensibilities and richness of craft from Asia along with a lot of drama and bucket loads of colour.

What do you expect from the FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? An accepting audience.

Karishma's workplace

How did your experience with fashion started? When did you decide to be a fashion designer?

I can never pinpoint exactly when this happened it was an area I developed an interest in with time. I did want to be a pilot and then an archaeologist too. I have books in which I have been trying to draw figures with clothing that go back to when I was around 11 so it was always present somewhere sub- consciously. The simple fact of creating new things determines my passion for design. Fashion in particular because it is so close to our daily lives. I love how contextual it is and how it is a key indicator of changes in society over time.

What are your goals concerning your career? What are your ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future?

The brand has only just started. I would like to see the Karishma Shahani label stand as a valued fashion label, creating a global Indian brand.

PS Magazine

'Ode to the Dutch fashion talent' by PS Magazine

There's a new magazine in Holland, with the concept 'Ode to the Dutch fashion talent'.
FASHIONCLASH loves this concept, specially because they will put young designers in the spotlight!

It is a magazine that provides a platform for young, emerging talent in fashion, fashion photography and fashion illustration. Current fashion magazines tend to focus on already established brands, making it difficult to get a foothold in the fashion industry. PS gives the chance to emerging talents and opportunity to make themselves known to the general public. PS is positive, fresh, upbeat and energetic and would like something nice and refreshing fashion show.

On the cover of the first issue the models is wearing an outfit by Leonie Smelt, that was a shown on FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2010.
Photo Peter Stigter

PS is an initiative of Stefanie Mensink and Puck Landewé.
They believe that too little attention to the many fashion talent in the Netherlands and a lack of inspiring and innovative independent fashion magazines in the Netherlands.
PS stands for Pre Stage.
PS From 3rd Arpil PS is available in shops throughout the Netherlands and will be available four times a year. PS is also on sale online: http://www.magvilla.nl/magazine/4451/ps-magazine

MINNAPALMQVIST

What is your name? Minna Palmqvist

What is the name of your label? MINNAPALMQVIST

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I graduated from Konstfack College of Arts Crafts and Design in Stockholm, from where I have a master degree in textile. Before that I went to the clothing design program at Novia University of Applied Sciences in Turku, Finland.

What inspires you as a designer? Imperfection, ambivalent feelings and awkwardness.

Who is your favorite designer/artist? Why? Louise Bourgeoise, mainly for her sculpting.

What can you bring to FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? Unwanted body shapes, exclusively handmade to enter the world of fashion.

Previews of the collection that Minna will show during FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011

Since you are participating in both are your works for the show and for the exposition going to be somehow related to each other? The collection on the catwalk is based on the shapes and the atmosphere in the film shown in the exhibition. That is how I usually start my work - by capturing a subject trough sculpting, photos and installations, which then turns into show pieces, to in the end become more wearable, producable garments. What is to be shown at FASHIONCLASH is all about the flesh, the fat and the transience of the human body.

"Intimately Social" (2007) by Minna Palmqvist

What do you expect from the FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I expect a creative environment where fashion is not all about trends and shopping, but a phenomena worth discussing and digging deep into.

How did your experience with fashion started? When did you decide to be a fashion designer/artist? Growing up on a Finnish island (Åland) I had no idea you could actually be a fashion designer for real. I loved clothes and made a lot of my own garments as a teenager, and drew millions of fashion illustrations on my room. When it was time to go to university my sister thought I should apply for design school. First I thought it sounded so superficial, and attended a semester of gender studies at Gothenburg University before I finally dared to apply and stand for my passion. And now I couldn't have imagined doing anything else!

What are your goals concerning your career? What are your ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future? I want to find a way to take my designs into sustainable production, as a complement to the hand made pieces and art installations I work with now. I want to find some good people to work with who share my vision, and be able to actually live from doing what I do.

Minna's atelier. We like.

LUKASZ STEPIEN by Lukasz Stepien

Lukasz
What is your name? Łukasz Stępień (Lukasz Stepien)

What is the name of your label? LUKASZ STEPIEN

What inspires you as a designer? I'm inspired by Multitasking    forms, multiple use of clothing, building construction of new clothes, often derived from the architecture. My clothes are intended to reflect my style in the trends of the season concerned.

Who is your favorite fashion designer? Why? My favorite designer is Martin Margiela. I appreciate him since he shows his style, in whatever form you can always recognize his style. He has its own approach to fashion that he guards and his fashion is an art rather than just displaying clothes.

Another designer whose work I value very highly is John Richmond. His collections are a combination of classic design with a new idea of the men's fashion.

What the both have in common is that they always show something new in men’s fashion, something what no one else has done so far.

What can you bring to FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? The moment I heard about FASHIONCLASH I thought it was a good opportunity to show my collection.

What do you expect from the FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I expect that my fashion and style will appeal to a wide audience. I also hope to make new friends in the fashion industry and gain recognition and customers on the new market.

Sketch, collection fall 2010

How did your experience with fashion started? When did you decide to be a fashion designer?
It began eight years ago. I felt that I had nothing to wear, and so I began designing for myself. Gradually my projects were gaining recognition. Then I was offered a job in Parisian company owned by Diesel, where I realized fashion is what I want to do.

What are your goals concerning your career? What are your ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future?  I am already developing my own brand in Poland and abroad. My clothes receive recognition among men, but not only. I will always promote my own style and its individuality in men's fashion, but of course I do not exclude working for large fashion house.
