Rita Sá from Portugal

Rita Sá comes from a small village in Portugal, near Porto. Probably the fact that she lived in a small village made her appreciate nature in a different way, paying attention to every detail and therefore becoming very emotional. For her, emotions are the most important part of a fashion designer’s work. This is reflected in her collection 'Glass ceiling', which is centred around the idea that 'if you have a glass ceiling, don't throw rocks in the air'. The collection explores the world of hypocrisy of the individuals who believe that it is better to be a false somebody than a true nobody. In a gradational process, the collection exposes the vulnerabilities that we try to hide.

Rita Sá's new collection will be presented at the Show Program on the Saturday 16th of June. You can buy your tickets here.

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?
My family has a strong connection with art, which has always influenced my interests. I have no doubt that fashion was the best way for me to express my thoughts and feelings. From the beginning of the creative process, until the last retouch before the models enter the runway, I worry about every detail and live it in a very emotional and personal way. Each concept, sketch or detail - however insignificant it may be - are a very personal discovery.

Filipe Augusto

Meet Filipe Augusto, born and raised in Peso da Régua, lives in Porto where, starting in 2014, he did his fashion degree at MODATEX – A Professional Training Centre for the Textile, Clothing, Apparel and Wool Industry.
After graduating in October 2016, he starts interning at the fashion house of Portuguese designer, Luís Buchinho. In 2017 he joins the Prinçipal Magazine team as a fashion editorial production assistant.
In April he won the second place at I-com Global contest. In October 2017, he presented the collection "7 skirts" at Sangue Novo platform, for which he has won participation at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2018.
He received an honourable mention, which gave him direct entry in the March 2018 edition of Sangue Novo where he will present his new collection  "Harvests".

In preparation to next edition of ModaLisboa, that will take place from March 8 - 11, our Portuguese correspondant Liliana Pedro sat down with Filipe to find out more about this promising designer.

Q&A with Filipe Augusto

What’s fashion for you?
I see fashion as two distinctive forms. First, as a product presentation for the consumer. And then, as a way of expression reflecting creativity and the imaginary of an artist.

How does fashion appeared in your life?
Fashion appeared unexpectedly in my life. In fact, my first passion was architecture. But, during my visual arts course, I started doing fashion related work and began to get interest in it. Following this this brand new passion of mine, I decided to study fashion design, a little bit blindly because I didn’t know that much about this industry. As time passed by, I realized that I had skills for fashion design and with strength and dedication I finished the degree course.

Where do you find inspiration? In what I’m feeling at the moment, in what surrounds me in the daily life and in the memories and stories, this is why my clothing has always references to the Portuguese culture.

ModaLisboa - Lisboa Fashion Week - Boundless

ModaLisboa - Lisboa Fashion Week - Boundless edition took place from 9 - 12 March.

Sangue Novo (New Blood) is a platform for young Portuguese designers who get the opportunity to show their work within a collective fashion show. Eight Portuguese designers where selected to show their collections. At the end of the show several awards are presented.
Winner of Sangue Novo/FASHIONCLASH Prize this edition was Rita Afonso, who convinced with her relevant story and playful collection 'I AM A VASE, BUT I SCREAM'.

"The collection “I am a vase, but I scream” intends to pay homage to all women in history that had to use their voices and scream for their rights. Specially those that wanted to be artists and were only allowed to practice the so called minor arts.
Clarisse Lispector once said: "If I have to be an object, let me be one that screams". The collection screams for the still nature paintings, the weaving art and for all the fruits and vases that replaced the breasts, the legs and the naked bodies of the major arts."

João Oliveira won the ModaLisboa prize. He was the winner of FASHIONCLASH prize during October 2016 edition. With his innovative new collection 'Society' he show great potential.
“Society” explores the conduct of individuals in the most varied contemporary landscapes, facing the technological audacity. The collection interprets the historic and the emotional charge behind each provided feedback – support, heaviness, indifference and attachment. The oversized silhouette is an analogy of the journey and a metaphor for the accrued burden. And the layering breaks down the topic elements: the road, the people and their attitude. “Society” combines a streetwear approach with details influenced by workwear.

As part of their prize, both Rita Afonso and João Oliveira will show their collection during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2017.

Other talented designers who presented their collection where Carolina Machado, Liliana Afonso, Rita Carvalho, Micaela Sapinho, Alexandre Pereira and Mariana Laurência.

Furthermore during ModaLisboa, there where shows from emerging and established designers such as Nuno Gama, Away to Mars, David Ferreira, Ricardo Andrez, Duarte, Valentim Quaresma and Patrick de Padua.

Catarina Oliveira

Preview of Catarina's collection
Catarina Oliveira is a young – 21 years old! – designer from Portugal. Her aim is to fully explore menswear. Catarina was discovered by FASHIONCLASH's artistic directors, Nawie Kuiper and Branko Popovic, during the ModaLisboa, Lisbon Fashion Week. Her latest collection, UNFOLD, will be showcased at the FASHIONCLASH Festival during the Fashion Shows.

What inspires you in general?
My references are a combination of what I identify myself to and the message I want to transmit. It can range from an artist’s work to a person who crossed my path on the street this morning. I assimilate everything I find interesting.

What place or city do you find inspiring?
I guess that the city itself isn’t the most important thing. The most important is what I’ve lived there. I can’t really say which city inspires me, but the fact that I lived between Viana do Costelo and Oporto in the last three years really influenced my life and, of course, my work.

What is it like to be a young designer in country/city?
I’m finding out what it’s like to be a young fashion designer in Portugal. It’s great that there are several platforms during the Portuguese Fashion Week allowing us to display our work. All the concern and support we are given motivates us greatly.
