Maastricht has a great new hot spot, The Dutch, a contemporary lifestyle hotel with a quirky retro style. FASHIONCLASH teamed up with The Dutch not only for the 8th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival but the collaboration provided a platform for our talented local designer and entrepreneur Joelle Boers. The Dutch commissioned print and fashion Joelle Boers to design a mini collection for The Dutch. The collection features t-shirs, backpacks, jackets and trouwers in various prints also designed by the designer.
The pieces can be bought at The Dutch.
The Dutch is a lifestyle hotel situated in a town house in the district of Wyck, which is known for its authentic shops, bars and restaurants.
Each guest room is individually designed and features modern facilities. These include air-conditioning, a comfy bed with fluffy pillows, a flat screen TV with over a 100 channels, in room coffee and tea, room service from our friends at Harry’s, a complimentary minibar and sufficient power outlets for all your mobile devices.
Enjoy a gin & tonic in the Lobby-Bar and meet up with the locals or have a free cappuccino or espresso in the Hangout where you can work, play games or relax. The hotel does not serve a traditional breakfast as it is surrounded with many great breakfast spots. It does provide a daily complimentary breakfast bag as a healthy start of the day.

FOLIA performance at FASHIONCLASH Festival
![]() |
picture by Team Peter Stigter |
Each year Project Sally Maastricht invites young choreographers during their Choreographic Residencies Program. Especially for the 8th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival they assigned the talented French choreographer, Martin Harriague to create a new work.
For this performance Martin Harriague once again collaborated with with Maastricht based designer Mieke Kockelkorn. Last year they created Tabula Rasa
'Throughout history, cultural heritage has been threatened by the constant evolution of the world’s social and political concerns. Too often, the result of this threat has been the disappearance of some of the world’s greatest cultural achievements.'
Folia is inspired by the traditions and history of the Iberian peninsula where Martin was born, creating a contemporary adaptation of ‘La Folia’ - a quick-paced, tumultuous dance dating back to the late 15th century.
Choreography : Martin Harriague
Costumes: Mieke Kockelkorn
Performed by: Patrizio Bucci, Luis Pedraza Cedrón

'COTTON' dance performance by Mami Izumi/GOTRA at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016
'COTTON' is a solo performance on the intersection of dance, installation and fashion. By using design, (visual) poetry and movement, Mami Izumi (Japan, 1987) performed a sample of her solo project COTTON.

Mami Izumi found a close creative partner in this process with Maastricht based fashion designer Verena Klein, who designed the costume of COTTON. ‘cotton [sample c6283-01]’ was presented during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016, the full performance of COTTON will be presented during Musica Sacra Performing Arts Festival in Maastricht on 16, 17 and 18 September 2016.

JIVIKA BIERVLiET at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016
![]() |
design by Jivika Biervliet | eyewear by Peter Hsieh | photo by Kevin Daniel Croes |
Besides designing menswear she also started with designing kidswear and collaborating with dancers. Her strong preference for menswear arose from the feeling that menswear have more rules. Jivika Biervliet searches for existing borders in order to exceed them. Characteristic for her designs are the materials, the clean lines and also the playfulness within the collections. The pieces are conceptual, experimental and wearable at the same time.
Jivika will collaborate with jewelry designer Peter Hsieh for her new collection, shown on Friday July 1 during Show 2 21:00, get your tickets here. You can also see Jivika Biervliet's work during FASHIONCLASH Festival at the Heritage Exhibition (July 1 + 2 at SAMdecorfabriek)
When did you realise you wanted to be a fashion designer? How long have you been designing clothing?
It actually happened very accidentally. When I was 18 I subscribed for an art contest and chose to design a fashion collection while I had never designed anything. So I just did it and teached myself really quickly how to sew, and then I won (it was a really bad collection). After that I did and entrance exam at the HKU and in 2010 I graduated in the course Fashion Communication. Right after that I started to focus on menswear.
NELE Maroquinerie at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016
Following she studied at KASK in Ghent, where her interest for design grew. Nele's love for fashion and leather will always be infinite and that's why she started her own label called NELE Maroquinerie.
You can see and buy Nele Huysmans' work at the Designer Market. Friday July 1 open at 18:30 and Saturday July 2 open at 16:00 (free entrance).
When did you realise you wanted to be a fashion designer?
The fascination for fashion is in my blood, at the age of 14 I chose to go that way in school as well and went toward studying Fashion and Creation. My creative en technical skills were encourage more so after Secondary school I therefore chose the Fashion Academy of Ghent. However after two years I decided to specialize in leather processing, focusing on handbags. And am since this year studying shoe design at SASK academy in Sint-Niklaas.

Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity (before you start designing; during the design process)?
I think I am still learning that, I try to think of an object from what I have seen (movie, book, news anything!! ) and reflect myself as well as the world that I'm living in and infuse and justify my opinion on it.
What challenges did you face during the design process?
Literally having no idea when you really need to activate your brain.
Can you tell us something about the project you will present at the FASHIONCLASH Festival?
The collection's title is Surreal Obsession, which is visioning about uncertainty, anxiety, false desire and obsession.
What does your collection try to communicate (what is it about)?
Our loop of being anxious about something we desire and we follow the path with shit loads of questions which is normal to be, its the human nature because the world we live in is fucked up, and it will never change.

MC FOOL by Malou Fool at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016
FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014 |
This year you can buy her designs at the Designer Market.
Mallow graduated at the Willem de Kooning Academie in 2011, after an Internship at Jeroen van Tuyl. Her collection was published in the newspaper NRC Next with the subtitle "Designers for the Future". Malou decided to use her vision on menswear to start a label of her own: MC FOOL by Malou Fool. The label presents a modern menswear label and redefines the male wardrobe from the classic clothes.
You can see and buy Malou Fool's work at the Designer Market. Friday July 1 open at 18:30 and Saturday July 2 open at 16:00 (free entrance).
When did you realise you wanted to be a fashion designer?
Since the age of 5 years old I have something with soft and colorful cloth. Until the age of 10 I was always touching a soft synthetic scarf in my hand when I was sucking my thumb. Maybe that is the reason where my sense of cloth comes from. It even went so far that there were holes falling in my scarf. Then my mother had to buy me a new one otherwise I didn’t sleep. I was also a very creative child, always busy with painting and drawing. I followed drawing lessons and I have combined my secondary school period with lessons at The Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. After my secondary school I went to the Willem de Kooning Academy to study Fashion.
What are your main achievements in your career at this moment?
Two years ago I have won the FASHIONCLASH Shoe Design Challenge powered by Invito. The price of the challenge was quite amazing. The menswear shoe collection I had designed was taken into production by Invito.
FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014 |
Fashion is a way of expressing yourself.
Who are your artistic influences or inspirations and why?
For my collections I get inspired by collected objects that give me a certain feeling. From that feeling I can make sketches for a new collection. Also inspirational for me are the people on the street. I get inspired by people who know to combine different kind of clothes or accessories together.
Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity (before you start designing; during the design process)?
Finding your own voice is difficult, there are so many designers all over the world. You have to express yourself /your design with a personal stamp. Like a singer that people know by his or her voice. That is the same with designs. You have to find something, like a little detail, a special color or treatment, or something else that people will notice. So they will recognize it immediately and they will say”: “Look, that is a real MCFOOL by Malou Fool”. By designing this collection of bags and accessories I have developed my personal stamp during the design process.
What challenges did you face during the design process?
To make functional bags for men, so they can put a laptop and other kind of stuff in it. But at the same time the bags and accessories have to look classic and sportsmanlike.
Can you tell us something about the project you will present at the FASHIONCLASH Festival?
I have made timeless and classic leather bags and accessories for men. My collection of bags and accessories can be combined by every outfit. Some bags are more classic, others will be more sportsmanlike. So for every man there will be a MCFOOL by Malou Fool bag.
Why have you decided to participate at FASHIONCLASH Festival?
In the past I have participated in FASHIONCLASH Festival 2013 and 2014. Both years I did the fashionshows. This year it is time to sell my handmade products that I have made till now. The fashionshows are more creative and crazier. This year I have decided to participate in the fashion market, to hear what people like of my designs, to talk with them and to persuade them to buy my products. Let’s say there is more interaction between the people and the designer.
What can we expect from you at the festival?
You can expect from me classical and timeless designs. There are a lot of timeless leather accessories like bags, wallets, sleeves and cases. My designs are not meant for one season. They are timeless and so durable that you can use them for several years.
What has changed/happened since your last attendance at FASHIONCLASH Festival?
There has happened a lot. I’m still busy with building my brand. It goes slow. Every time I make a little step further in my carrier.
FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014 |
Describe yourself in three words.
Creative, perfectionist and social.
What’s a standard day for you?
Just start the day with a shower, take breakfast and after that I will just work all day long.
Are you a people's person or a loner?
That depends of what I’m doing. In my nonworking time I ‘m a person people. I like to have friends, my family or other people around me, to go out and visit things. But in my work I’m more often a loner because then I can reach better results, I can be more focused on my designs, on drawing and making them.
What’s your favourite city?
New York by far
Are you going on holiday this year? If so, where are you going?
Unfortunately, I am not going on holiday this year, I have to work.
What is your price range?
My price range goes from 39, 95 – 329,00 euro.

When did you realise you wanted to be a jewellery designer?
I’m a jewellery designer. For all my life I was a creator. When I was a child I loved playing with LEGO or polymer clay. At first, I started making beads from clay – FIMO. Then, I had to transform my beads into jewellery. At some time, I abandoned handmade beads for ceramics, and natural stones. However making jewellery from components was not giving much creative power. I realised that in order to make my passion more professional I had start learning how to work with tools and metals. I attended some goldsmithing course in Warsaw. Now, it’s my 9th year of following the passion of crafting jewellery.

VERWEVEN 2016 by Nina Willems
VERWEVEN 2016 by Nina Willems
Share the story behind your outfit!
Verweven - Trailer 2015 from Verweven on Vimeo.
Clothes are a very personal thing; we wear them directly to our naked skin, and are part of the way we show ourselves to the world.
What is the story behind the clothes YOU wear? What do they tell us about who you are, and what memories and emotions do they hold for you? In this installation, you can share your story with the rest of us! You will be interviewed, and a short film will be made about your outfit of today and the story behind it. Big or small, funny or sad, every story is worth sharing.
So don't be shy, don't hesitate and share!
Filming your own short film will take about 10 - 15 minutes.
Within an hour, you can see your own short film on one of the screens on the outside
Verweven is part of the Heritage exhibition at SAMdecorfabriek
Open 1 July (18:30 — 23:00)
2 July (16:00 — 23:00)
Credits: Interviews: Nina Willems
Camera: Marijn Smulders
Editing: Derk Stenvers
Design: Vincent Willems
