Third edition of Fashion Displacement

Fashion Displacement
Professionals to rework the industry in partnership with VOGUE Germany

On April 26th 2018 the Florentine Fashion School Polimoda invited a selection of influential teachers and decision makers of the Fashion industry to the Aufbauhaus Atelier in Kreuzberg for this year’s edition of Fashion Displacement, organized in partnership with VOGUE Germany. Berlin was the third city after New York (2016) and Florence (2017) in which the panel discussion was held. Topic of this year’s event was the question of ways to build bridges between professional training and the fashion industry.
The topic was discussed by:
- Christiane Arp (President of the Fashion Council Germany and Editor-in-Chief of VOGUE Germany)
- Laudomida Pucci (Deputy Chairperson and Image Manager at Emilio Pucci)
- Christopher Lacy (Director of Customer Experience and Strategy at Barneys New York)
- Johann König (Art Dealer and Gallery Owner,König Galerie)
- Branko Popovic (Co-founder & Co-Director of FASHIONCLASH foundation)
- Sam Cotton (Fashion Designer and Co-founder of Agi&Sam)
- Danilo Venturi (Director of Polimoda)

The panel discussion was chaired by Linda Loppa, one of the most significant women in Fashion. Loppa had been the director of the Polimoda for nine years, before she moved to Paris in 2015 to commence with her current role of establishing connections and insight from the continuously growing industry for the institute.
Loppa’s introduction of the guests was not quite done yet when the participants of the panel already started their debate. They all agreed immediately: the gap between the education in the industry and the actual working situation is currently too wide. Therefor not many designers are prepared to start a business after their studies.

STEINROHNER

Photographer: Christine Kreiselmaier
Today we introduce you to Inna and Caroline, the two lovely ladies behind the label STEINROHNER.

Hey Inna and Caroline! Please introduce yourself. Who are you? Where do you come from? What is your field of specialisation?
We are Inna Stein and Caroline Rohner our label is called STEINROHNER. We both graduated from the Art Academy Berlin Weissensee in 2013 with a Master’s Degree in Fashion Design.

Where are you based?
We are based in Berlin.

What inspires you in general?
We are inspired by old photography, movies and architecture, we both are open-minded for everything. All things can be inspiring; especially we are looking for structures in all kind of items.

What place or city do you find inspiring?
Inna: My favourite city is Istanbul, it has so many layers and different parts of the city. There is the contrast between old and new, rich and poor.
Caroline: For me it is difficult to announce one specific place. I like the feeling of being somewhere new, to get to know a new place and be surprised.

What is it like to be a young designer in your city/country?
In Berlin it's still not too expensive to rent a studio, also you can find a big variation of shops for sewing and nice fabric stores. We have also the possibility to screen print and laser cut in our university.

What attracts you about the FASHIONCLASH platform?
We like the whole concept and also the designers, who are working very experimental and creative. We think it is something very special for the Netherlands.

Mylène van de Sande finds inspiration in ‘Plattenbau’

1. Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
I am Mylène van de Sande. I’m a Dutch fashion designer, educated in Rotterdam and currently living and working in Berlin.

2. Tell us a little bit about the concept behind your collection.
The collection is based on ‘Plattenbau’. Plattenbau is the model of extreme architectonical simplicity. Monotony. The size and scale of the complete are of such, that details can be missed. Those flats were mainly build under communist regime and according to communism doctrine, were meant for the ideal human being.
This collection is designed with the same architectonical simplicity in mind, combined with influences of casual clothing. Just as the Plattenbau flats are all made out of concrete, the outfits will all be made out of the same white fabric, with screen printed color blocks.
