FabricAge Exhibition

On Sunday, 10th September during Parcours Maastricht, FabricAge unveiled the first textile creations with an exhibition at Mosae Forum in Maastricht. The exhibition is open until 24 September.

The textile creations are designed by five fashion designers, six experienced crafts buddies, and made my more than 150 seniors during 250 hours. The starting point for the design was the city of Maastricht; the different neighborhoods and the diversity of inhabitants, but also the power of connection and cohesion. The five designers are Maarten van Mulken, Verena Klein, Ebby Port, IXX Jolijn Fiddelaers and Suzanne Vaessen (Strikks).

FabricAge
Following the success of last year’s project LET'S (AD)DRESS THE PEOPLE (1 June-3 July, 2016) FASHIONCLASH and stichting Tout Maastricht joined forces again to transform this multidisciplinary social design project into a sustainable and distinctive textile product & label: FabricAge. The objective of FASHIONCLASH and Tout Maastricht is to establish a unique fabric design label which emphasizes on the active participation of the elderly and traditional crafts, bringing together the arts and crafts of textile design with the tangible and intangible heritage of our culture.FabricAge facilitates communities of all ages to come together, to connect through creativity, to gain meaning and to become visible to society.

FabricAge develops high-end one-of-a-kind textile designs, based on the wishes and preferences of clients, visualized by talented designers, crafted by experts, and collectively created by the senior community. Each design and process are tailor-made, giving participants the opportunity to be part of a challenging, educational, social and creative experience, and enabling them to contribute to a unique end result. This can range from an outspoken textile art object to an eye-catching wall decor.

Future Petroleum by Annika Kappner at Marres

Future Petroleum by Annika Kappner at Marres during FASHIONCLASH Festival 2017
Future Petroleum by Annika Kappner is an installation performance adapted for The Painted Bird at Marres to create a multi-sensorial tableau vivant that envelops the viewers. The work explores the layering of perception and the consumption of experiences offered by the fashion and entertainment industries, the corporate world and the art world. It wonders what form of energy source the vast stream of images that are created and consumed on a daily basis will eventually yield.

Annika Kappner (DE, 1980) crafts multi-sensory experiences in the extended field of painting, by reverting principles of virtual and digital realities into the analogue realm to create glitches in perception. Prompted by her experience as an investment banker, her work targets the evolution of consciousness in relation to mental patterns and the underlying forces that shape their systemic counterparts in nature, visual arts, technology and science. She is a co-founder of the cross-modal artist collective Elephants & Volcanoes.

Performers: Fina Anjou (SE), Nicola Baratto (IT), Karolien Buurman (NL), Arie de Fijter (BE), Aurélien Lepetit (FR).

Future Petroleum is made with the support of the AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts). The performance is part of Fashion Makes Sense, the 9th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival in Maastricht (June 29 – July 2).

Europe 2017. Are we dancing on a volcano? Are renewed nationalism, xenophobia, the distrust of politics and democracy, the arrival of refugees, and economic insecurity preparing us for a terrible meltdown? It is well possible. It shouldering give us hope for this project, since the best art is produced on the verge of despair, When civilizations crumble and we’re about to shift into a new world order.

Marres Maastricht produced a spectacular mural about Europe by nineteen artists who have painted all rooms, corridors, the stairwell, floors and ceilings of the historic Marres House. Having a surface area of about 750 m2, the painting depicts a series of beautiful and frightening environments, zoals a high-tech clone supermarket, the last surviving piece of primeval forest, a Berlin love and hippie fest space, a spider portrait corridor, a new life festival in the year 2050. Gijs Frieling directed the modern Gesamtkunstwerk. The artists Frank and Kim Koolen David Bots developed a comprehensive soundtrack, and Charlott Markus and Kalle Mattsson make a publication.

FASHION VS. ART expo at SCHUNCK

4 March – 21 May & 25 May – 6 August2017
Location: SCHUNCK* Glaspaleis, Vitrine

A multidisciplinary exhibition that questions the relationship between fashion and art. Curated by FASHIONCLASH and organized in collaboration with SCHUNCK*.

Fashion occupies a prominent position in our contemporary culture and is one of the largest industries in the world. But is it art?
The status of fashion within the art sphere is an everlasting subject of debate. There are legendary designers who identified themselves as artists such as Elsa Schiaparelli, who declared in her autobiography that she considers fashion design not as “a profession, but as an art.” Nowadays many prominent designers such as Martin Margiela, Miuccia Prada, Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs reject this statement.

My designs are based on my paintings. The paintings and the fashion go hand in hand. I get inspired by the way of thinking and moving of our society, I want to translate this into my textiles and paintings – Jade van der Mark

Within the academic sphere and the world of young designers there are many examples of cross-overs with art and autonomous approaches to fashion as a form of art. The multidisciplinary FASHION VS. ART exhibition displays a selection of work by fashion designers who in their own practice question and challenge the boundaries of fashion as a form of art. With their playful and innovative approach to fashion they stimulate our imaginary world and question our perception. Ask yourself: Is it art or is it fashion?

The ‘clash’ in FASHIONCLASH represents the encounter between cultures, artistic disciplines, audience and fashion. FASHIONCLASH believes that the art of fashion can stimulate critical debate about the role of fashion within our society and the world of art.
FASHIONCLASH presents the art of fashion not only by scouting outspoken avant-garde designers and providing a platform for upcoming talent, but also by organizing cross-over projects such as the CLASH project. Since the first edition in 2009 the CLASH Project challenges every year ten artists and designers from different artistic disciplines (all non-fashion) to transform their practice, both materially and conceptually, into a ‘wearable’ fashion outfit, that can be presented on the catwalk during FASHIONCLASH Festival. The perfect opportunity for creative minds to step out of their comfort zone, to play and experiment!

Participants from different art and design disciplines (all non-fashion designers) are challenged to transfer their practice, both materially and conceptually, to a fashion outfit. It is an invitation to come out of the comfort zone, to play and experiment.
For the 2016 edition the participants are asked to take the theme of Heritage in consideration, whether  personal or the heritage of their practice.
Over the years we Clash Project has been developing into an iconic project in cooperation with Matylda Krzykowski, who was the curator of the project until 2015 edition.

Joshua Enker Presents New Collection

Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
My name is Joshua Enker, I am a fashion designer from Amsterdam. I design for both men and women and I tend to start from material development.

What inspires you in general?
Fashion, art, history, crafts...the idea of transformation and how one is perceived.

Where are you based?
I’m based in Amsterdam, for now.

What is it like to be a young designer in your city/country?
There’s a whole web of institutions, subsidies, etc. that seem to support fashion, however it’s quite daunting to find your way through it though. Selling and actually producing your work is a big challenge, as there is hardly a market for home-grown design. The Dutch will spend on their homes but not on clothing and accessories.
