Gösta von Platen - Breaking Bodily Boundaries

Photography: Polo Lindström Muller

Meet Gösta von Platen, a Swedish fashion designer specialising in menswear, currently doing an internship with a menswear label in Paris. Through his work, he aims to create an environment that can evolve over time, exploring the boundaries between body, material and environment.

You will be able to admire his work between the 11th and 17th of June at De Bijenkorf as part of the Showpieces exhibit.

What made you realize that you wanted to work in this field?

Early on I was drawn to the visual arts, which developed into a fascination for the connection between the body and the outer world. While working with painting, photography, music and installation I found it the most interesting to combine the different mediums and conceptualize the outcome in relationship to the body.

What would you say are your main achievements in your career?
As a newly graduated fashion design student in Berlin, what I feel is my greatest achievement at the moment is that I moved to Paris and am now doing an internship to gain experience as a professional.

What are your sources of inspiration?
I find inspiration in all sorts of places, but what really inspires me is the interaction with whatever it is I find inspiring. I try to dive deep into the source and see the connections to other places. Fields I regularly search for inspiration are contemporary art, natural experiences, human bodies, light and music. My projects also normally starts with thorough reading on the topic.

The textile creations are designed by five fashion designers, six experienced crafts buddies, and made my more than 150 seniors during 250 hours. The starting point for the design was the city of Maastricht; the different neighborhoods and the diversity of inhabitants, but also the power of connection and cohesion. The five designers are Maarten van Mulken, Verena Klein, Ebby Port, IXX Jolijn Fiddelaers and Suzanne Vaessen (Strikks).

FabricAge
Following the success of last year’s project LET'S (AD)DRESS THE PEOPLE (1 June-3 July, 2016) FASHIONCLASH and stichting Tout Maastricht joined forces again to transform this multidisciplinary social design project into a sustainable and distinctive textile product & label: FabricAge. FASHIONCLASH Festival preview at Catwalk Maastricht

FASHIONCLASH Festival preview performance at Catwalk Maastricht.

Today, the audience in the city of Maastricht experienced a small tasty teaser of to expect during the festival. In cooperation with SESSIBON and MAFAD the newest local talents presented their work at Mosae Forum and Entre Deux shopping areas.

The displayed red outfits are designed by 3-D year students from the Body department at MAFAD. The red represented the urge to protest and speak out. Does Fashion Make Sense? was the question posed while parading among the streets dominated by fast fashion shops.
The statement was not there to judge the people but mostly to engage a dialogue in the streets, afteral the street is the biggest display of 'fashion'.
Moreover the performance happend to give voice to the new generation of designers and the eight MAFAD students: Ashley Luypaers, Max Niereisel, María Voth Velasco, Michelle Cornelissen, Dana Lipka, Julina Bezold, Natalia Rumiantseva and  Empar Juanes Sanchis

Fashion Makes Sense, the 9th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival will take place from June 29 till July 2 in Maastricht.

Meerssenerweg 215, free entrance

(Does) Fashion Makes Sense?
Come and join the dialogue on July 2.

Through ‘Fashion Makes Sense’ FASHIONCLASH this year focuses on senses and making sense in relation to fashion. Focused around these two topics the Fashion Talks provide an interactive dialogue with the designers, the audience and the fashion industry.

Moderated by Saskia van Stein, artistic director at Bureau Europa, a stage will be given to a several festival participants and professionals to engage in a discussion about the topic. In addition, this is an opportunity to get to know the designers and discover their vision on the future of fashion.
A space will be given to a few designers to talk about the two subjects and make personal contact with other designers, the audience and the fashion industry.

So, Does Fashion Make Sense?

We live in a rapidly changing world where progress is accompanied by environmental pollution and ethical issues. The fashion world is a mighty billion industry, and like no other is able to create an illusion and seduce us humans and excite our senses. Today's fashion industry is a reflection of society with a strong focus on aesthetics. Our society approaches fashion as a purely visual phenomenon and doesn’t always see the nature of the interaction with the body (of the wearer), despite the fact that fashion is the most intimate form of art, as it is literally worn “on the body”! As a second skin, clothing also enables us to express ourselves and helps us make sense of the world.

The Fashion Talks are part of the Fashion Makes Sense LAB Sunday program at the SAM-decorfabriek during FASHIONCLASH Festival.

PROGRAM
13:15 – 14:15 Fashion & Senses
- Lecture performance: Olle Lundin x Floriane Misslin
- Talk panel: Sensewear (Emanuela Corti & Ivan Parati), Sepideh Ahadi and Carolyn Mair (Course leader for MA Psychology for Fashion Professionals and MSc Applied Psychology in the Fashion Business School at LCF).

14:30 – 15:30 (Does) Fashion Make Sense?
- Talk panel: SHI[R]T (Eva Wagensveld & Jeffrey Heiligers) Lucia Chain (CHAIN) and Roosmarie Ruigrok (Clean & Unique).

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Floriane Misslin is a native French creative researcher born in 1992. Her central focus is on portraying non-binary identities in the mainstream media. She followed an education in applied arts near Strasbourg and moved to Paris shortly after, to learn more about fashion design. Feeling too limited by the educational system she left the school in Paris, and moved to Eindhoven to attend the design academy. The wide approach to design brought her back to a more theoretical and critical perspective. She is currently developing her project ‘Uni-Sex’ and works as a freelancer on the side.

Sensewear is a collection of clothes and accessories that emphasize the use of senses. Sensewear consists of two designers, Emanuela Corti and Ivan Parati. Their primary purpose is to stimulate and improve awareness of our senses, while training us to better use them all. Some Sensewear items are designed to mute physical sensations, some to sharpen them. The collection is inspired by therapies applied to Sensory Processing Disorders and developed with the technical support of therapists assisting people affected with autism. Anxiety, stress, panic attack are most typical autism’s symptoms but more and more people suffers them, therefore the collection is not addressed only to people with disabilities but it is aiming at enhancing everyone busy urban life.

All garments are produced using 3d knitted fabrics Gaetano Rossini and Alcantara. Textile sensors and actuators are produced and developed by Comftech our technical partner. Sensewear has won three health and design related award (Lexus Design Award 2015, Wearable Technology at Venice Design Week 2016, AXAPPP Health Tech & You Future Award 2017).

Sepideh Ahadi, as a multicultural brand, is bridging the gap between her pure Middle Eastern background and European life experience. In her work Sepideh embraces the simplicity of the traditional techniques used in Iran, her home place with the elegance found in Italy where she finished her M.A in fashion design and the practical aesthetic of German lifestyle, where she lives and work now. The brand is dedicated to slow fashion and sustainable practices, in that the designer creates her collections through a considered and experimental process.

The collections mostly reflect social issues in the modern lifestyle where the designer challenges herself to find an artistic way to contribute to making a difference. As a designer, Sepideh feels the responsibility to invite her audience to think about fashion in a different and more interactive way through her designs.

Carolyn Mair is a Chartered Psychologist and Chartered Scientist with a PhD in cognitive neuroscience. She developed the MA Psychology for Fashion Professionals and MSc Applied Psychology in Fashion at LCF. In the beginning of her career, Carlyn was a graphic designer and visual merchandiser, she worked for department stores, where she designed and installed store window displays, in-store installations and advertising materials. She was interested in fashion, this led to her designing clothes for herself and friends.

SHI[R]T is an online platform/webshop for designers that offer fair or sustainable products. Not the dull goatysocks kind we all know. But one supporting [young] designers with their own vision. No mass production but small and local production. As a brand being transparent is key, know what you buy. The two people behind this brand are Dutch designers Jeffrey Heiligers and Eva Wagensveld. The psychology behind fashion has become less about quality or durabilty and more about being fast, cheap and easy to replace. Does fashion make sense if the quality of the products is high, labour conditions are good and the environmental impact is minimal? In other words: Do you want to buy a shit-shirt, or rather invest in something fair?

CHAIN is an emerging fashion label based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their work has been shown several times at Buenos Aires Fashion Week, Fashion Edition Buenos Aires and International Fashion Showcase – London Fashion week. Committed to the environment, the designs are made by hand with eco, and sustainable fabrics, all natural plant based fibers and uncycled plant based dyes. Zero waste patterns, a-gender fits and sustainable production are important methods of their work and make the clothing to test time.

By extracting postures and re-contextualizing them Olle Lundin hopes to denaturalize the body-language of high fashion. By doing this he has the intention to show the norms, ideals and invisible expectations that are inherent in the visual language discourse of high fashion advertising today!

Starting as a textile buyer, Roosmarie Ruigrok discovered her passion in fair supply chains. After selling her own company, Promax Corporate Fashion, she worked at Amnesty International, Fair Wear Foundation and as CSR consultance at Elsewear Foundation, known by “Green is the new black and as International cotton manager for Fairtrade. In 2007 Roosmarie founded Clean & Unique. A foundation that help brands and starters in fashion to learn more about sustainability. Today Clean & Unique transformed into an agent for change to create more knowledge and awareness about sustainability in fashion, workwear & textiles by giving advises, training, workshops, inspiration sessions and organizing events. Roosmarie is an International speaker for 15 years and spoke during Premier Vision Paris, Mare di Moda in Cannes but also in Berlin, Rome, London and in the Netherlands. Last March Clean&Unique celebrated it’s 10th anniversary.

Lucia Chain | FASHIONCLASH Festival 2017

Meet Lucia Chain, a fashion designer from Argentina. She originally comes from Bernal, a town located in the province of Buenos Aires. She graduated from the University of Buenos Aires (U. B. A), from the department of Architecture, Design and Urbanism. She realized she wanted to be a fashion designer in her early childhood when her grandmother taught her how to sew and embroider. Ever since then she viewed it as a fun game of playing with fabrics and imagining a runway full of her collections. Then when she grew up, she decided to pursue a career in fashion.
"I realized that fashion does not only mean 'making clothes' and that we can use fashion as a medium to express ourselves or to criticize something we don’t like of society, then I really fell in love. "

FASHIONCLASH CHENGDU 2017

“FASHIONCLASH 2017: Future of Fashion”

24 March – 23 April 2017, in Chengdu, China

In March and April of this year, Maastricht-based interdisciplinary fashion platform FASHIONCLASH, jointly with Chinese partners Punch Me, Cross Lab and Dutch-Chinese organization About Asia will introduce “FASHIONCLASH 2017: Future of Fashion” in Chengdu.
After a successful first exhibition of FASHIONCLASH in China (2015), as part of an exchange programme between the cities of Maastricht (Netherlands) and Chengdu (Sichuan, China), FASHIONCLASH now presents a larger, more comprehensive, and complete story at the newly opened “Future Center” in downtown Chengdu from 24 March until 23 April.

‘Future of Fashion’ is a multidisciplinary exhibition composed out of work of more than 30 emerging designers and artists from The Netherlands and Flanders. The exhibition represents a broad spectrum of fashion design aesthetics, visions and various approaches to fashion. The presented work stands out for its concept, experimental material and textile, innovative shapes and tailoring. In addition to fashion the exhibition features screenings of interdisciplinary fashion films and performances. Among the participants there are award winning designers like Marlou Breuls and Nikki Duijst, avant-garde designers’ collective Das Leben Am Haverkamp and promising theatre makers like Lotte Milder and Milou van Duijnhoven. The selection of participants is an eclectic mix of designers that graduated from the top schools such as AMFI, ArtEZ Arnhem, MAFAD, KABK, Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and Theatre Academy Maastricht.
FASHIONCLASH gathered a team of theatre performers that will bring the exhibition alive. Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck created an overall concept that serves as a platform to connect the physical space of the exhibition with performance space and engage interactions with the audience.

In collaboration with the Chinese cultural initiative Punch Group and their cultural festival “PunchMe Art Festival”, FASHIONCLASH meets west China for the second time. The exhibition will be staged in ‘Future Center’, an unfinished raw space within a building that perfectly fits the spirit of the new generation designers and artists who are redefining the future with their visions. ‘Future of Fashion’ creations will temporarily find their home in this space and inspire the audience of the potential that lays ahead. Anything is possible! Like in a labyrinth FASHIONCLASH invites visitors to wander and get lost in imagination of the future fashion makers. The Chinese showcases of FASHIONCLASH are developed and initiated in close collaboration with About Asia; a Dutch-Chinese promoter of cultural and creative industries in west China.

Life of Ornament - Viewmaster Projects & FASHIONCLASH

FASHIONCLASH teamed up with Viewmaster Projects within the context of the Life of Ornament project that is on display since December 1. Two gigantic video art works are projected on the Eiffel building in the Sphinxkwartier in Maastricht.
In addition we have invited performer Daan Couzijn and fashion designer Maarten van Mulken to create new work inspired by the Sphinx ornaments. In cooperation with filmmaker Daniel van Hauten the will create a music video / fashion film in which they combine their disciplines and fascinations with the heritage of the Sphinx.
Result will premiere on December 16th at Lumière Cinema and will be presented at various events in 2017.

Life of Ornament is a crossover project combining cultural heritage and time-based media. Artist duo Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukács present two video works in which the renowned ceramic decals of Sphinx and the Société Céramique come to life. Projected large onto the historic Eiffel Building’s facades, the once motionless, decorative prints on saucers, cups, plates, and teapots transform into animated leitmotifs that flow into one another, creating new juxtapositions of the imagery. Using modern digital techniques, the ornaments ‘detach’ from the decorative dinnerware they embellish. The two video works – one highlighting floral prints, the other, landscape motifs – honour the outstanding design of Maastricht’s manufacturing industry and function as a contemporary animation, entwining different cultures and style periods.

Life of Ornament runs parallel to the Eiffel Building’s renovation. In the evening, when refurbishing work halts, the two video works illuminate the scaffolding scrim surrounding the building. The projections will partly move with the different stages of the restoration.

JIVIKA BIERVLiET at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016

design by Jivika Biervliet | eyewear by Peter Hsieh | photo by Kevin Daniel Croes
Jivika Biervliet is a menswear designer based in Arnhem. In 2010 she graduated from the HKU in Utrecht. In 2012 she started as an independent designer her self titled brand JIVIKA BIERVLiET.
Besides designing menswear she also started with designing kidswear and collaborating with dancers. Her strong preference for menswear arose from the feeling that menswear have more rules. Jivika Biervliet searches for existing borders in order to exceed them. Characteristic for her designs are the materials, the clean lines and also the playfulness within the collections. The pieces are conceptual, experimental and wearable at the same time.

Jivika will collaborate with jewelry designer Peter Hsieh for her new collection, shown on Friday July 1 during Show 2 21:00, get your tickets here. You can also see Jivika Biervliet's work during FASHIONCLASH Festival at the Heritage Exhibition (July 1 + 2 at SAMdecorfabriek)

When did you realise you wanted to be a fashion designer? How long have you been designing clothing?
It actually happened very accidentally. When I was 18 I subscribed for an art contest and chose to design a fashion collection while I had never designed anything. So I just did it and teached myself really quickly how to sew, and then I won (it was a really bad collection). After that I did and entrance exam at the HKU and in 2010 I graduated in the course Fashion Communication. Right after that I started to focus on menswear.

STUDIO SAMSON at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016

What are your main achievements in your career at this moment?
One of my main achievements was completing my internship at Iris van Herpen. The creations of Iris van Herpen have always been an inspiration to me. To work there was truly a once in a life time expe-rience. Another big achievement for me was when I created my first fashion film called AETHER. A project where I creatively totally went my own way.

In what projects are you involved at this moment?
Currently I’m working on my branding graduation project. This is a retail design project for the Dutch brand First of August.

When did you realise you wanted to be a fashion designer?
Two years ago, when I realised that I can communicate through the collection.

What are your main achievements in your career at this moment?
I used to run a bar and a cafe before studying fashion.

How would you define fashion?
Communication.

Who are your artistic influences or inspirations and why?
Everyone around me or I encounter, the fact that individual have different idea and perspective inspires me in all kinds of way.

Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity (before you start designing; during the design process)?
I think I am still learning that, I try to think of an object from what I have seen (movie, book, news anything!! ) and reflect myself as well as the world that I'm living in and infuse and justify my opinion on it.

What challenges did you face during the design process?
Literally having no idea when you really need to activate your brain.

Can you tell us something about the project you will present at the FASHIONCLASH Festival?
The collection's title is Surreal Obsession, which is visioning about uncertainty, anxiety, false desire and obsession.

What does your collection try to communicate (what is it about)?
Our loop of being anxious about something we desire and we follow the path with shit loads of questions which is normal to be, its the human nature because the world we live in is fucked up, and it will never change.

Describe yourself in three words.
WOFF ROAR GRRRRR.

Vegan, vegetarian, healthy diet or any food will do?
‘Food’ will do.

What is your bad habit?
Recently Im playing my childhood games, cs…

Are you a people's person or a loner?
Loner.

Do you have a pet?
YESSS DOGGGGGG.

What/Who do you miss the most when you are not at home?
iMac and my husband

MC FOOL by Malou Fool at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016

FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014
Malou Fool is not a new name at FASHIONCLASH Festival, she presented her collections on the catwalk in previous editions.
This year you can buy her designs at the Designer Market.

Mallow graduated at the Willem de Kooning Academie in 2011, after an Internship at Jeroen van Tuyl. Her collection was published in the newspaper NRC Next with the subtitle "Designers for the Future". Malou decided to use her vision on menswear to start a label of her own: MC FOOL by Malou Fool. The label presents a modern menswear label and redefines the male wardrobe from the classic clothes.

You can see and buy Malou Fool's work at the Designer Market. Friday July 1 open at 18:30 and Saturday July 2 open at 16:00 (free entrance).

When did you realise you wanted to be a fashion designer?
Since the age of 5 years old I have something with soft and colorful cloth. Until the age of 10 I was always touching a soft synthetic scarf in my hand when I was sucking my thumb. Maybe that is the reason where my sense of cloth comes from. It even went so far that there were holes falling in my scarf. Then my mother had to buy me a new one otherwise I didn’t sleep. I was also a very creative child, always busy with painting and drawing. I followed drawing lessons and I have combined my secondary school period with lessons at The Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. After my secondary school I went to the Willem de Kooning Academy to study Fashion.

What are your main achievements in your career at this moment?
Two years ago I have won the FASHIONCLASH Shoe Design Challenge powered by Invito. The price of the challenge was quite amazing. The menswear shoe collection I had designed was taken into production by Invito.

FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014
How would you define fashion?
Fashion is a way of expressing yourself.

Who are your artistic influences or inspirations and why?
For my collections I get inspired by collected objects that give me a certain feeling. From that feeling I can make sketches for a new collection. Also inspirational for me are the people on the street. I get inspired by people who know to combine different kind of clothes or accessories together.

Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity (before you start designing; during the design process)?
Finding your own voice is difficult, there are so many designers all over the world. You have to express yourself /your design with a personal stamp. Like a singer that people know by his or her voice. That is the same with designs. You have to find something, like a little detail, a special color or treatment, or something else that people will notice. So they will recognize it immediately and they will say”: “Look, that is a real MCFOOL by Malou Fool”. By designing this collection of bags and accessories I have developed my personal stamp during the design process.

What challenges did you face during the design process?
To make functional bags for men, so they can put a laptop and other kind of stuff in it. But at the same time the bags and accessories have to look classic and sportsmanlike.

Can you tell us something about the project you will present at the FASHIONCLASH Festival?
I have made timeless and classic leather bags and accessories for men. My collection of bags and accessories can be combined by every outfit. Some bags are more classic, others will be more sportsmanlike. So for every man there will be a MCFOOL by Malou Fool bag.

Why have you decided to participate at FASHIONCLASH Festival?
In the past I have participated in FASHIONCLASH Festival 2013 and 2014. Both years I did the fashionshows. This year it is time to sell my handmade products that I have made till now. The fashionshows are more creative and crazier. This year I have decided to participate in the fashion market, to hear what people like of my designs, to talk with them and to persuade them to buy my products. Let’s say there is more interaction between the people and the designer.

What can we expect from you at the festival?
You can expect from me classical and timeless designs. There are a lot of timeless leather accessories like bags, wallets, sleeves and cases. My designs are not meant for one season. They are timeless and so durable that you can use them for several years.

What has changed/happened since your last attendance at FASHIONCLASH Festival?
There has happened a lot. I’m still busy with building my brand. It goes slow. Every time I make a little step further in my carrier.

FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014

Describe yourself in three words.
Creative, perfectionist and social.

What’s a standard day for you?
Just start the day with a shower, take breakfast and after that I will just work all day long.

Are you a people's person or a loner?
That depends of what I’m doing. In my nonworking time I ‘m a person people. I like to have friends, my family or other people around me, to go out and visit things. But in my work I’m more often a loner because then I can reach better results, I can be more focused on my designs, on drawing and making them.

What’s your favourite city?
New York by far

Are you going on holiday this year? If so, where are you going?
Unfortunately, I am not going on holiday this year, I have to work.

What is your price range?
My price range goes from 39, 95 – 329,00 euro.

Meet Barbara Sanchez Kane, a Mexican born fashion designer, who is specifically focused on menswear inspired by her mexican heritage. In 2010 she completed her first degree in industrial engineering from Universidad Anahuac. Five years later she graduated from her next degree in fashion design from Polimoda, Florence, after she finished her intership at German designer Bernhard Willhelm in Los Angeles. In the month June of the same year she decided to launch her brand SANCHEZ-KANE.

She will present her new collection 'Courage of the Brave' on Saturday July 2 in Show 3 during FASHIONCLASH Festival. You can buy tickets here.

When did you realize you wanted to be a fashion designer?
I loved to style myself even in my small town… got a couple of stares from time to time. I ended up studying engineering as it was expected form me, but it never felt quite real. Somewhere in the middle of my BA I had some health problems that just made me change 360 my standing point. Talked to my family about wanting to study fashion and they supported me only if I finished engineering, so I did! Graduated from fashion design from Polimoda in and have been designing ever since.

When did you realize you wanted to be a fashion designer?
I was 12 and came to the open day of my former high school. They presented a fashion show and gave the opportunity to do textiles and fashion class for the next 5 years. I was sold! After that I did the pre-course at ArtEZ (Arnhem) and got accepted to the fashion design course.

What are your main achievements in your career at this moment?
Being selected for the Mittelmoda Fashion Award 2016 and recently being selected for the Dorothy Waxman Textile Prize (Lidewij Edelkoort.inc, New York). It is something you dream of when you start studding and now it all happens.

In what projects are you involved at this moment?
I am part of MOAM Collective 2016. Together with a group of 5 designers of different schools we are working on a collection that will be presented in October. We are being coached by various Dutch fashion designers and are able to produce fabrics in the Textile museum in Tilburg. During this process the Dutch television is making a documentary about the project. I am also doing some freelance work in the fashion design field.
