Alya Hessy at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016

Visual artist Alya Hessy, graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2015, operates in the world between the body and textiles. Born in Ukraine, living in the Netherlands and fascinated by Japan, Alya explores the realms of politics, philosophy and physicality through making objects, writing and performing. She seeks emptiness as a way of letting go of the pre-defined and allowing multiple interpretations.

You can see Alya Hessy's work during FASHIONCLASH Festival at the Heritage Exhibition (July 1 + 2 at SAMdecorfabriek) and Heritage Show + Talk (July 3 at Gebouw M, Tapijnkazerne).

When did you realise you wanted to be a fashion designer?
I have always been busy with art through my life, but it became the main thing when I went to study to the Rietveld Academy, where I graduated in the summer 2015.

TING GONG at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016

photo: Fan Liao
We’re happy to introduce you to Amsterdam based Chinese designer Ting Gong. She graduated cum laude from BA at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2015 and gained experience during her internship at Melitta Baumeister in New York.

Ting Gong will present her new collection at FASHIONCLASH Festival on Saturday July 2. You can get your tickets here.

Describe yourself in three words.
A listener, a rebel and a stick-to-it-ive.

How would you define fashion?
Fashion is a field that involves a lot of various collaborations with other creative fields in order to create a notion of futurism, that illustrates something new and potential.

Who are your artistic influences or inspirations and why?
Hussein Chalayan and Chuang Tsu.

Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity (before you start designing; during the design process)?
Believe in a simple idea, and create an universe out of it through a lot of practice.

Joshua Enker finds inspiration in Japanese culture

1. Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
Hi, my name is Joshua Enker. Last year I graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam with a BA in Fashion.
My degree collection, which I’ll be showing here at FAHIONCLASH, was a mixed collection; I wanted the pieces to be able to be worn by both sexes. That’s something that’s quite important to me.

Introducing Peter Godijn

1. Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
My name is Peter Godijn. I was born in the Netherlands in 1978 and I am currently working in Amsterdam as a fashion photographer. My interest in photography began at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam where I attended the film department.
This contrariness represents my believe that the most effective process is rarely the most obvious one. Having discovered photography, I assisted for a while before begining my own assignments. At this very moment, I’m focusing on progressive image-making projects and scripting story lines which reflect culture.
