Clash Project 2017

Emma Wessel
CLASH PROJECT, Fashion By Non-Fashion Designers Since the beginning of FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2009, Clash Project has been one of the highlights of FASHIONCLASH Festival.

The Clash project each year invites 10 young artists and designers to translate their work into a wearable piece for the catwalk. To the 10 participants from different art and design disciplines (all non-fashion designers), Clash project is an invitation to come out of the comfort zone, to play and to experiment. The project marks the core concept of FASHIONCLASH – ‘connecting talent, disciplines, visions and cultures through fashion’. The outcome is always refreshing, unexpected, captivating and trendsetting.

We are thrilled to announce the participants of this year’s Clash project, who’s work will be showed during the 9th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival “Fashion Makes Sense”.

FASHION VS. ART at SCHUNCK

Alexandre de Vos for Clash project 2016
4 March – 21 May & 25 May – 6 August2017 Location: SCHUNCK* Glaspaleis, Vitrine

A multidisciplinary exhibition that questions the relationship between fashion and art. Curated by FASHIONCLASH and organized in collaboration with SCHUNCK*.

Fashion occupies a prominent position in our contemporary culture and is one of the largest industries in the world. But is it art?
The status of fashion within the art sphere is an everlasting subject of debate. There are legendary designers who identified themselves as artists such as Elsa Schiaparelli, who declared in her autobiography that she considers fashion design not as “a profession, but as an art.” Nowadays many prominent designers such as Martin Margiela, Miuccia Prada, Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs reject this statement.

Within the academic sphere and the world of young designers there are many examples of cross-overs with art and autonomous approaches to fashion as a form of art. The multidisciplinary FASHION VS. ART exhibition displays a selection of work by fashion designers who in their own practice question and challenge the boundaries of fashion as a form of art. With their playful and innovative approach to fashion they stimulate our imaginary world and question our perception. Ask yourself: Is it art or is it fashion?

The ‘clash’ in FASHIONCLASH represents the encounter between cultures, artistic disciplines, audience and fashion. FASHIONCLASH believes that the art of fashion can stimulate critical debate about the role of fashion within our society and the world of art.
FASHIONCLASH presents the art of fashion not only by scouting outspoken avant-garde designers and providing a platform for upcoming talent, but also by organizing cross-over projects such as the CLASH project. Since the first edition in 2009 the CLASH Project challenges every year ten artists and designers from different artistic disciplines (all non-fashion) to transform their practice, both materially and conceptually, into a ‘wearable’ fashion outfit, that can be presented on the catwalk during FASHIONCLASH Festival. The perfect opportunity for creative minds to step out of their comfort zone, to play and experiment!

Clash Project # 8 - FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016

Charlotte Van de Velde, Clash Project 2015
Since the beginning of FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2009, Clash Project each year invites 10 young artists and designers to translate their work into a wearable piece for the catwalk. Participants from different art and design disciplines (all non-fashion designers) are challenged to transfer their practice, both materially and conceptually, to a fashion outfit. It is an invitation to come out of the comfort zone, to play and experiment.
For the 2016 edition the participants are asked to take the theme of Heritage in consideration, whether  personal or the heritage of their practice.
Over the years we Clash Project has been developing into an iconic project in cooperation with Matylda Krzykowski, who was the curator of the project until 2015 edition.

Curious what the 8th edition of the project will bring? The result will be presented on Saturday July 2nd SHOW 5 at the catwalk of FASHIONCLASH Festival.

Foamboy Monsters by Niek Pulles at Comme des Garçons

Designer Niek Pulles installs Foamboy Monsters in Comme des Garçons stores all over the world.
Some of you may remember, the very first Foamboy monster made its debut at FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2011. Niek Pulles was one of the 10 non-fashion designers we invited for our Clash Project. Inspired by material remains of his graduation work 'Architectural Acoustics' in connection to human body Niek created his first Foamboy.

For their seasonal beginning Comme des Garçons asked Dutch design talent Niek Pulles to create 19 ‘Foamboy Monsters' for companies stores.
Originally produced as costumes for dancers and performers at various events including FASHIONCLASH Festival and Tedx. The work finds its influence in the hyperbolic portraits of MC Escher and Oskar Schlemmer’s triadic ballet. Similar to the aforementioned projects, the outfits feature unique, forms that distort the human body as it relates to the space it occupies.
Iindustrial shapes of hexagonal nuts, rigid gears, and round screws have been extruded out of waterjet cut foam to capture shadows, enhance light, and emphasize their depth as they are randomly dispersed around a main emblem placed in the center of the chest. Each of the figures have been decorated in black and grey to complement the label’s color scheme and are posed in a way that contrasts the existing models dressed in the brand’s apparel.
The 19 creations that have resulted from the collaboration are now intertwined with manikins in Tokyo, Kyoto, Paris, New York, and the company’s original store located in London’s Dover Street Market.

Making of: Clash Project

Since 2009, the Clash Project has been one of the highlights of the FASHIONCLASH Festival. By allowing non-fashion designer to design fashion, the Clash Project perfectly illustrates FASHIONCLASH's concept - "connecting talent, disciplines, visions and cultures through fashion". This year, 10 designers were asked to present their idea of fashion. The pictures of their creations were shot Tuesday by Karen Kikkert, and of course, we were there.

Agata Olek brings her passion for crochet in the Clash Project

Olek was born Agata Oleksiak in Poland and graduated from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland with a degree in Cultural Studies. In New York, she rediscovered her ability to crochet and since then she has started her crocheted journey/madness. Olek believes she chose crocheting as her artistic method to be able to do two things at once: to watch movies and make art.

“I think crochet, the way I create it, is a metaphor for the complexity and interconnectedness of our body and its systems and psychology. The connections are stronger as one fabric as opposed to separate strands, but, if you cut one, the whole thing will fall apart. It’s also a literal extension of the body, a sort of second skin that can be stretched and reshaped by the body inner workings as it shapes or distorts that body. I can’t really speak to what I want to reveal—to know that, you’d have to find the end of the string and unravel it.” (Agata Olek)

Kaspar Hamacher presents “Out of one piece”

1. Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
Atelier Kaspar Hamacher Langestahl 5 Eupen Belgium. Designer, between art and craftsmanship.
By taking nature as my basis, is focused resolutely on physical rather than conceptual design. I feels more as a craftsman than a designer. The things I can do with wood appeal to the imagination: whether it is a tree stumper or a piece of leather, the key is authenticity in every step of my design process.

2. What inspires you as a designer/artist?
Simplicity, Nature, Function.
“The difference between the purely natural and the technologically produced can be clearly felt. There are things that cannot be copied such as the warmth of wood, the smell and touch of leather or the individuality; all that cannot be imitated.”
