A | Scen | Dance by Carlijn Veurink

Meet Carlijn Veurink, a recent graduate from the Product design department at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. Even though her background is in product design, she has always been interested in performing arts, and tries to combine disciplines in a playful way. Movement, humour and the human body are the key aspects in her work, resulting for instance in dance costumes which translate the movements of the dancer into completely new ones. This is the thought behind her current project, 'A | Scen | Dance'. Everyone has their own way. Their own way of acting, thinking and moving. Religion and fashion both are ways to express and expand yourself. A | Scen | Dance, controlling influence, refers to the way you must create your own autonomy within these concepts to make them personal. This collection consists of different suits which react to your body. You can take control over shape and outline by moving around. Transitioning your movements make the suit come alive.



Carlijn Veurink makes use of materials that have their own way of reacting to change. The movements the body makes echoes through the material and translates this into completely new ones.

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?
I like to imagine scenarios in which people behave, move or react in different ways than they would normally do. I use design to create and visualise these scenarios. I try to make other people also wonder about how we do or make things.

Why did you choose fashion?
I didn't specifically choose fashion. I studied product design because it is really broad and can result in anything. After I graduated I got an assignment from the cardboard company Smurfit Kappa. I decided to make the cardboard flexible and put it around the body to make it dance along with the body. I collaborated with a dancer from Introdans to make a video of this costume. This worked so well I decided to expand this project into a collection which resulted in the work I will show during FASHIONCLASH.

What would you say are your main achievements in your career?
My 'career' has only recently started, but so far I got an assignment from Smurfit Kappa to experiment with their materials, which are paper and carboard. This was presented during the Dutch Design Week last year. And my graduation collection The Production Theatre was selected for the Diploma Selection of Designblok festival in Prague and for Make me! during Łódź Design Festival in Polen.

Giulia Farencena Casaro - Sacrifiction

Giulia Farencena Casaro is an Italian menswear and knitwear designer who defines herself as a silent observer, who constantly likes to discover new things and loves to analyze the human behaviour. Her new collection 'Sacrifiction', in line with the theme of 'Fashion, my religion!' explores the idea that through the rise of the digital world, a lot of traditional religious values have been lost, particularly that of sacrifice. In Christian faith, God sacrificed himself for us to be saved. It is this appreciation for humanity, and the gestures of kindness and authenticity that she is exploring in her collection. By using authentic and traditional materials, she is studying this theme through the lens of her home region, South Tyrol.

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?

I always knew somehow that I wanted to work in fashion but I thought that something so beautiful could only exist as a hobby. I only realized that it was a real profession when I was 9 years old.

Why did you choose fashion?

I was unsatisfied of many things starting from the human’s interpersonal communication and ending with socio-political and environmental issues. I felt that fashion can silently give you something that becomes part of your body and therefore maybe become part of your mentality.

What would you say are your main achievements in your career?

If I look back, I think that my main achievement is the intellectual consciousness I developed throughout this period of studies. The first year I won the Polimoda scholarship in collaboration with Class which gave me the opportunity to pursue my studies. I recently have won the Polimoda talent, a one year start up incubator program.

D.A.I. by Du Qinling

Meet Du Qinling, the Chinese fashion designer behind the label DuAsInfinity living in the Netherlands. She started her own label DuAsInfinity (aka D.A.I.) after graduating from the  London College of Fashion.

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?
 I am always attracted to well made and design objects, textiles, crafts and furniture.

Why did you choose fashion?
Clothes are what we need every day. For me, working in fashion feels like working in something essential to our life needs, not only physically, but also spiritually.

What are your sources of inspiration?
Music, Arts, Films, books.

Why did you decide to participate in FASHIONCLASH 2018? What are your expectations?

FASHIONCLASH exists since 10 years, so it must be an excellent event celebrating fashion. I would like to meet many professionals in fashion or media fields, gaining more press.

Interdisciplinary Designer Amy Ollett

Meet Amy Ollett, an English fashion designer. 
She specializes in an interdisciplinary approach to fashion, combining her training as a dancer and choreographer with design. The work explores the interface between dance, fashion, movement and design and is informed by the properties of fabric, garment and choreography to develop form, shape and conceptual relationships. This is also showcased in her new collection 'MOVERE'. The collection has led into the development of a new performance design methodology that allows expression and physicality to go beyond the skin, encouraging practical and artistic coherence of both body and design.

 he vulnerability of the body against fabric allows for a relationship to unfold, and garment begins to form from a reactive movement of the bodies communication. The collection identifies how and where the body communicates through fabric informing the garment resolution. Thus, allowing the design and movement to become intrinsic to one another. Through movement and choreography, the development of design allows a new opening, in which to discover innovative and constructive movement vocabulary that can be used for design purposes.

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?

During my training as a dancer, I was always drawn to avant-garde imagery within the fashion industry which influenced my movement as a choreographer. However, I did not see its potential as a combined field until making my move into Fashion education. Through my Master's Degree, I discovered new methods to develop fashion design with the body and movement. This discovery has made me want to work within fashion design to transform the way we experience clothing in connection to our body. 


Why did you choose fashion?

It wasn’t until my last year of my Bachelor's Degree that I began to understand the relationship I was having between my own movement and design. However, my vision for design was not meeting the movement I wanted to fulfil and I felt unsatisfied as a mover. Consequently, I knew I needed to focus on the design aspect of my practice and bring fashion to the surface once and for all. Fashion was creating that space in-between to materialise, leading to extensions of movement I could not achieve with my own physical body. This is what lead me into doing my Masters Degree in Fashion.


Judith van Vliet at FASHIONCLASH Festival

FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015 is starting within few days - soon you will have an opportunity to appreciate various talented designers and talents. One of them is Judith van Vliet, Enjoy our interview with her to find out what you can expect on the catwalk, who is going show her collaboration with Chris van Elzen, sell her pieces at the Designer Market and present her piece in de Bijenkorf.


Who are you?
I am Judith van Vliet, a Dutch fashion Designer, based in Noordwijk. I have graduated in 2012, at the Utrecht School of Arts. Since 2 years I have my own label.

How would you describe your work? What is your technique? Have you shown your collections before, if so, where? 
I design women's clothes, which often contain an architectural shapes. Besides that, I like to experiment with non-conventional materials. I used in the past wooden pins, sedge, perplex and metal. I like to work on pieces that can be both seen as art and clothes. My graduation collection 'The Western Uniformity' was my first real catwalk collection and ,next to the graduation show in Utrecht, it has been showed at Amsterdam Fashion Week during a talent show. My first collection under my own label was presented last year: Excidium, which was prepared in collaboration with Chris van den Elzen. This collection was showed during previous edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival and also during Cologne Fashion Days, where we won the Cologne Catwalk Award.

Sophie Kula at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

Today we present one of our polish talents, who are going to present and sell their pieces at FASHIONCLASH Festival Market 2015. Sophie Kula, polish designer Warsaw-based, established her brand in 2011. Since that time she presented her designs in many places in Europe, including Paris or Tbilisi. She graduated at International Costume and Fashion Design School in Warsaw. Her newest collection 'La Magie Noire' is inspired with slavic legends and original samples will be exposed at the Market!


What is your most name worthy achievement up to now in relation to fashion field?
I am proud to say that I have been a finalist for a number of competitions such as: ‘‘Off Fashion’’, “Fashion Oscars” , NOWFASHION; Mod’Art in Paris, or Art&Fashion Forum in Poznań. In 2013 I was nominated for the prize: Silesia Fashion Point. In 2014, I won one of prize in Contest “Be Next” in Georgia. Award was a scholarship “Fashion Marketing &Buisness for Professionals” in Domus Academy in Milan. 

My first collection was named as ‘Thmubelina/Patchwork Soup’, but my second collection named ‘Global Warming’ was the one, that started to gain attention from fashion professionals and audience. ‘Global Warming’ was shown at the 11th Open Air Festival in Gdańsk, Festival Neo Fashion Jamboree in Bielsko Biała and Silesia Fashion Look 2013 in Katowice. My third collection – ‘Sweet Memories’ was presented at ‘Elite Model Look Final’ competition in August 2013. In January, during Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris, at Young Fashion Designer Exhibition Art Georgia, my third collection was presented. My last collection ‘La Magie Noire’ had premiere during Paris Fashion Week in showroom POLISH FASHION NOW in March 2015, and lastly I have presented my collection recently at MB Fashion Week in Tbilisi. 

I want to keep my designs in cheerful and colourful character. In my clothing I use high-quality textiles and majority of my pieces are hand-made ended. I design for individualistic and energetic women.

Flora Miranda at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

These are probably the most futuristic designs of the upcoming edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival.
Flora Miranda, who was born and raised in Austria, had been experiencing art since her early years - her artistic roots shared the genes of creativity Her childhood and youth was filled with many artistic achievements, what resuled in graduating at Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Flora Miranda is presenting her work in the Fashion Show Program, the Gender exhibition and SHOWPIECES expo at de Bijenkorf.

How would you describe your work ?  Have you shown your collections before, if so, where ?  What is your most name worthy achievement up to now in relation to fashion?

The clothes I create are expressive, extravagant and experimental. What technique I apply really depends on the specific project and I do not want to limit my work by describing it through words at this moment. I rather stay open minded to treat each project individually; if I feel the importance to create in a way I never did before then I won´t hesitate to take this freedom. Eventually I find myself creating explicit characters through my designs who look as much part of another world as many of us feel and wish to be born in a totally apart dimension. By instance I would dress you up in a lasershow inspired garment from a rhythmic pattern of red green and blue fake fur that mixes in movement of your body to iridescent rainbow colors. Then we would see what happens - how would you move? I find it very exciting to observe how one reacts to a certain garment - the garment itself can make you do things you would otherwise never have thought of. This power can be used in so many different ways…

Who are your artistic influences or inspirations and why? 
I am especially attentive to the human body, physical border experiences, our perception, societal observations, conversations, music and art in general. A person that inspires me since a long time on various levels is the artist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. His vast spectrum of musical output throughout his life in collaboration with other artists (who then were forming bands like Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle or Thee Majesty) is absolutely fascinating in combination to his manifestly views on the world and eventually the love story of his life with Lady Jaye: They performed plastic surgery on their bodies until they looked like the same human being. To look into such ideas gives me so much energy and drive!
