A | Scen | Dance by Carlijn Veurink

Photography: Leroy Verbeet
Meet Carlijn Veurink, a recent graduate from the Product design department at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. Even though her background is in product design, she has always been interested in performing arts, and tries to combine disciplines in a playful way. Movement, humour and the human body are the key aspects in her work, resulting for instance in dance costumes which translate the movements of the dancer into completely new ones. This is the thought behind her current project, 'A | Scen | Dance'. Everyone has their own way. Their own way of acting, thinking and moving. Religion and fashion both are ways to express and expand yourself. A | Scen | Dance, controlling influence, refers to the way you must create your own autonomy within these concepts to make them personal. This collection consists of different suits which react to your body. You can take control over shape and outline by moving around. Transitioning your movements make the suit come alive.

Carlijn Veurink makes use of materials that have their own way of reacting to change. The movements the body makes echoes through the material and translates this into completely new ones.

'A | Scen | Dance ' will be presented at the SAM-Decorfabriek on Saturday the 16th of June as part of the Show Programme. You can get your tickets for the show here.

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?
I like to imagine scenarios in which people behave, move or react in different ways than they would normally do. I use design to create and visualise these scenarios. I try to make other people also wonder about how we do or make things.

Why did you choose fashion?
I didn't specifically choose fashion. I studied product design because it is really broad and can result in anything. After I graduated I got an assignment from the cardboard company Smurfit Kappa. I decided to make the cardboard flexible and put it around the body to make it dance along with the body. I collaborated with a dancer from Introdans to make a video of this costume. This worked so well I decided to expand this project into a collection which resulted in the work I will show during FASHIONCLASH.

What would you say are your main achievements in your career?
My 'career' has only recently started, but so far I got an assignment from Smurfit Kappa to experiment with their materials, which are paper and carboard. This was presented during the Dutch Design Week last year. And my graduation collection The Production Theatre was selected for the Diploma Selection of Designblok festival in Prague and for Make me! during Łódź Design Festival in Polen.

Teun Seuren presents I Decline

God is a Woman!? project
Teun Seuren, is a 25 year old Dutch designer from Limburg. Last year he graduated from HKU University of the Arts Utrecht as a Fashion Designer specialized in men's fashion. His work gives of a message by posing questions with different perspectives such as homosexuality gender and vulnerability. For this collection, 'I Decline', he has been inspired by the theme of the FASHIONCLASH Festival 2018, Fashion, My Religion!.
His collection explores the relationship between religion and gay power, making a statement about being gay and having faith.

TEUN's collection will be presented at the Show Program on Saturday the 16th of June. Get your tickets here.

You can also see Teun's work at Centre Céramique as part of God is a Woman!? project exhibition.
More information about the project:here

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?
I realized that I wanted to work in fashion after making the mistake to study electrical engineering. This wasn't the right career for me and I had to make a radical change. One of my teachers gave me the recommendation to visit a fashion school. When I stepped inside that school I knew thas was the place for me and it felt like I was home.

Why did you choose fashion?
As a child I always loved to dress up and play around in my grandma's workspace. Once I made an entire collection for my nieces, made from old fabrics and curtains. This was my first experience with fashion and I loved it. I can definitely say that I got the sewing skills from my grandma, and I am really grateful that she let me help her all the time, even when I was always standing in her way because of my curiosity.

What would you say are your main achievements in your career?
After I graduated I was selected for the "Lichting Show" at Amsterdam Fashion Week, this was definitely the icing on the cake after 4 years of hard work. I didn't win but being part of this amazing event was worth all the hard work.

What are your sources of inspiration?
Mostly I get inspired by things that frustrate me. I want to highlight these frustrations and transform them into something good.

Discover HENKJENZ on Saturday June 16 at FASHIONCLASH Festival in Maastricht.
Tickets and info: here

What made you realize that you wanted to work in (fashion) design?
The everyday interest in dressing yourself up. Clothing communicates your mood and identity, or who you want to be.

Why did you choose fashion?
Fashion or clothing in general, is a daily thing for everyone . We like to give social messages through clothing, for us Fashion is a way of communicating to every unique individual.

What would you say are your main achievements in your career?
Amsterdam Fashionweek, Berlin Alternative Fashionweek, collaborations with artists , and off course FASHIONCLASH.

What are your sources of inspiration?
Social Themes about exceptance. Thats mostly our base. Besides that, there aren't really any sources in particular. We built a world around the social theme that we choose for a collection. Because we want our brand to be tangible for everyone, the inspiration comes from different angles. We create a playfull twist to our collections to make the social theme less heavy or to give people a positive view.

FASHIONCLASH CHENGDU 2017

“FASHIONCLASH 2017: Future of Fashion”

24 March – 23 April 2017, in Chengdu, China

In March and April of this year, Maastricht-based interdisciplinary fashion platform FASHIONCLASH, jointly with Chinese partners Punch Me, Cross Lab and Dutch-Chinese organization About Asia will introduce “FASHIONCLASH 2017: Future of Fashion” in Chengdu.
After a successful first exhibition of FASHIONCLASH in China (2015), as part of an exchange programme between the cities of Maastricht (Netherlands) and Chengdu (Sichuan, China), FASHIONCLASH now presents a larger, more comprehensive, and complete story at the newly opened “Future Center” in downtown Chengdu from 24 March until 23 April.

‘Future of Fashion’ is a multidisciplinary exhibition composed out of work of more than 30 emerging designers and artists from The Netherlands and Flanders. The exhibition represents a broad spectrum of fashion design aesthetics, visions and various approaches to fashion. The presented work stands out for its concept, experimental material and textile, innovative shapes and tailoring. In addition to fashion the exhibition features screenings of interdisciplinary fashion films and performances. Among the participants there are award winning designers like Marlou Breuls and Nikki Duijst, avant-garde designers’ collective Das Leben Am Haverkamp and promising theatre makers like Lotte Milder and Milou van Duijnhoven. The selection of participants is an eclectic mix of designers that graduated from the top schools such as AMFI, ArtEZ Arnhem, MAFAD, KABK, Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and Theatre Academy Maastricht.
FASHIONCLASH gathered a team of theatre performers that will bring the exhibition alive. Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck created an overall concept that serves as a platform to connect the physical space of the exhibition with performance space and engage interactions with the audience.

STEVEN VANDERYT

In collaboration with the Chinese cultural initiative Punch Group and their cultural festival “PunchMe Art Festival”, FASHIONCLASH meets west China for the second time. The exhibition will be staged in ‘Future Center’, an unfinished raw space within a building that perfectly fits the spirit of the new generation designers and artists who are redefining the future with their visions. ‘Future of Fashion’ creations will temporarily find their home in this space and inspire the audience of the potential that lays ahead. Anything is possible! Like in a labyrinth FASHIONCLASH invites visitors to wander and get lost in imagination of the future fashion makers. The Chinese showcases of FASHIONCLASH are developed and initiated in close collaboration with About Asia; a Dutch-Chinese promoter of cultural and creative industries in west China.

Naomi Rachèl Timan at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016

Naomi Rachèl Timan is a Dutch designer, who is fascinated by; textiles, colours and shapes. With her work she loves to create sustainable alternatives. At FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016 she will showcase her “I was a ….” collection made from recycled leather, with huge pride. She graduated from BA in Fashion Design at HKU The University of the Arts Utrecht.

You can see and buy Naomi Rachèl Timan's work at Designer Market. Friday July 1 open at 18:30 and Saturday July 2 open at 16:00 (free entrance).

What challenges did you face during the design process?
Because it depends on what kind of recycled leather I find or get from people, (think of what size, colour, suede or flat leather) I never know for sure what my newest collection will be like. This makes it more fun to me, as every collection will never be exactly the same.

What do you want to communicate with your designs in general?
My designs can be defined as minimalistic. Because of the story behind the material, the shape can’t distract too much. Every design has no lining, so you can see the total beauty of the leather when opening a bag.

Studio Kiekebos at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

Fotografie: Olga Simonenko
Charlotte Kiekebos is a young promising designer, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, who will present her new collection at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015. From a very young age, she was fascinated by design and graphic arts. In 2013, she graduated from the Fashion Design Department at HKU in Utrecht. Recently, she has created her own fashion label ‘Studio Kiekebos’.

Q&A with the designer Charlotte Kiekebos:

How would you describe your work? What is your technique?
My work is influenced by the basic rules and codes of fashion design. However, my objective is to create a new atmosphere by manipulating the basic rules of design, e.g. by adding detracting or combining elements. This perspective is soundly reflected in all ‘Studio Kiekebos’ designs and it creates a new reactionary experience. In principle, I prefer to place my designs within a decor, in which I add abstract and graphic elements. During the design process I use Moulage, a technique that creates shapes with fabric on the human body.

JIVIKA BIERVLiET at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

We love, when participants from past editions of our festival are comming back - we can observe them developing, progressing and changing. Today we introduce you to Jivika Biervliet, who will participate already 4th time at FASIHONCLASH Festival! This time Jivika will collaborate Peter Hsieh, while the results of this work will be presented at FASHIONCLASH Festival Show case.

Who are you?
My Name is Jivika Biervliet, I'm a menswear designer.

Where do you come from?
My parents are from Surinam, I was born in Nijmegen (NL) and live in Arnhem. In 2010 I graduated in Fashion communication at the HKU.

Where are you based? How long have you been designing clothing?
I'm based in a nice small studio in the center of Arnhem where everything is being made. I started designing clothing just a few months before I started with my study in 2005, I had no idea of what I was doing haha.

How would you describe your work?
My work is always very personal. It starts with a feeling which grows into a concept. I always try to let my collections speak for itself. The collections are build-up of showpieces and minimalistic ready to wear items. I especially love to work with unusual materials. My designs are conceptual, experimental, clean and wearable at the same time.

What is your technique?
Becoming my concept. Look, walk & talk like my concept. And I also need be alone so I can travel back to my own planet.

Have you shown your collections before, if so, where?
Yes I have shown my collections among others during previous editions of FASHIONCLASH, Amsterdam Fashion Week and FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland & Cologne Fashion Days on behalf of FASHIONCLASH.

What do you aspire to be?
Forever young.

What is your most name worthy achievement up to now in relation to fashion?
The chances to collaborate with other great inspiring artist like accessory designer Peter Hsieh, visual artist Niek Pulles and choreographer Jasper van Luijk.

Who are your artistic influences or inspirations and why?
Hip-hop culture, dancers, artists like MJ, and for this collection E.T. the Extra Terrestrial was a main influencer. The collection which I will show during FASHIONCLASH Festival in June is inspired by the feeling of being alienated from this world. It's about authenticity and the longing to escape, it's about being yourself.

Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity (before you start designing; during the design process)?
I use my intuition.

"To me fashion is about sharing feelings, having fun and sharing your world. As a child I always dreamed of having my own planet with a rollercoaster in my backyard. Though fashion I can build that backyard."

What was the most important thing your parents taught you, that you now bring into your work?
Never forget where you come from

Have you recently experienced something that totally blew your mind?
My little 8 month old nephew Vince James smiling at me.

Which item in your wardrobe really typifies you and why?
My XXXL black coat which makes me look even more shorter. I'm 1.56m tall. Regularly people tell me that I'm small, but I don't feel small at all.

What is your most favorite accessory and why?
My Surinamese pendant (ogri ai) which protects me, I can't remember when I was not wearing it.

What is your most favorite brand and why?
Henrik Vibskov because of his insane installations and every show that I fell in love with. He's a genius. The same goes for Craig Green, I especially love his designs.

Are you a people's person or a loner?
Both. I can get so much energy of partying and laughing with my friends or meeting new people. But I also love to be on my own, be on my own planet, get back into my own world, to feel what I feel.

What do you strive for in your work?
Inspire people with my vision.

What are the key factors in your designs?
Humor, outspoken materials, conceptual & clean silhouettes.

What makes your items different from others (What is your designing philosophy)?
I believe that it is unnecessary to work with boundaries in menswear.

Fashion needs to progress year in year out, how do you keep innovating?
Listen to my intuition and especially stay true to how I feel and see things.

What is the contemporary condition of fashion in your place of residence?
In Arnhem you find the most interesting fashion on the streets. In my opinion it's the coolest thing if people wear what they like and where they feel good in, whether it looks good or not. It expresses a personality.

What is your ultimate goal? What do you want to achieve with your projects?
Creating more opportunity’s to share my work. I hope to have more projects with dancers and other creatives. I love collaborations, it's so inspiring to bring more forces together. And I would love to see people on the streets wearing my designs.

What are your views on gender categorization in fashion? (as in differentiating between male/female collections, is this necessary?)
I don’t think it’s necessary because I believe that the strict boundaries which you see in men’s fashion are unnecessary. I believe it’s more interesting if you can view it in the way you want.

Do you believe the western binary gender system (male/female) will eventually disappear?
The western binary gender system may not disappear, but I hope that there will be more equality and acceptation in the differences between gender and races.

What are your thoughts on the idea that unisex is the new androgynous in fashion?
I think it's really cool. The differences between men and women are getting smaller and smaller, also in the way of living. My collections also contains a lot of items which are suitable for women, and it’s really surprising how stylists use my work on female models, sometimes I can’t even recognize the pieces.

What does your collection try to communicate (what is about)?
My collection is inspired by the feeling of being alienated from this world It’s about authenticity and escapism, it’s about being yourself.

Why have you decided to participate at FASHIONCLASH?
I already participated 3 times before. I did a catwalk show, an exhibition and last year we showed a dance performance on the runway. I especially love the positive relaxed vibe during FASHIONCLASH Festival, and working with the nice people who organise it.

What has changed/happened since your last attendance at FASHIONCLASH?
FASHIONCLASH Festival offered me the opportunity to show and expose my work during the Cologne Fashion Days. It was so much fun and I would never had missed this, I’m really thankful for every opportunity they have created for me. The distinguished dreams dance project they approached me for was also an amazing thing, I hope to do more of these projects in the future.

Chris van den Elzen at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015

Chris van den Elzen is a Dutch designer, based in Utrecht. He focuses on shoes design - his accesorise look like futuristic art pieces. Chris will present his newest collection with Judith van Vliet at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2015 Show case.

Chris says: I always try to find a balance between High Tech and Hand-crafted element in my designs. I design shoes, accessories, jewelry and materials. Last June was my catwalk debut, together with Judith van Vliet I created the EXCIDIUM collection, I focused on the Shoes and Jewelry, Judith on the garments. The collection was presented at the Fashionclash festival 2014. But my shoes have seen more places than me at the moment and they are still traveling. From Amsterdam to Dubai, from Vienna to New York. What I would aspire is a show in London, being part of the official London Fashion Week Program.

Who are your artistic influences or inspirations and why?
My inspirations come a lot from the architecture and the living creatures around me. I love to combine Architectural with amorphous shapes.

Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity (before you start designing; during the design process)?
That is an ongoing story, so many things spook to my mind, connecting those stories to create a concept goes automatic.

What was the most important thing your parents taught you, that you now bring into your work?
Be yourself and push further then your boundaries, never give up if you really want something.

Which item in your wardrobe really typifies you and why?
My black neoprene sweater, why? because I like the futuristic feel of it, and it’s a minimalistic masterpiece.

What is your most favorite accessory and why?
My first necklace made from a left over piece of my graduation collection, just some sentimental values

Are you a people's person or a loner?
Definitely a people’s person!

What do you strive for in your work?
Passion and a perfect balance between high-tech and hand-crafts.

What makes your items different from others (What is your designing philosophy)?
I always try to be pure, I don’t like nonsense and I try to make something that you want to treasure and keep even when you can’t really use it anymore. make it an art piece, a collectors item.

Fashion needs to progress year in year out, how do you keep innovating?
I always try to improve my skills and to perfect the fit and comfort of the shoes.

What is your ultimate goal? What do you want to achieve with your projects?
My goal is to be an innovative and inspiring shoe designer.

What are your views on gender categorization in fashion ? (as in differentiating between male/female collections, is this necessary ?)
I think gender in collections is fading, Gender is more and more disappearing, I think everybody needs to wear what they want to and feel happy about it.

Do you believe the western binary gender system (male/female) will eventually disappear?
Jup I do. I think it be great when it does. Can’t wait for that time to come.

What are your thoughts on the idea that unisex is the new androgynous in fashion?
I think there is still a big difference between androgynous an unisex.. I think Unisex clothing can be worn they way that person want to wear it/combine it… an androgynous person is a person who you can’t really define into an gender the first moment you see them. but It’s the moment you start to learn to know the person that counts, that’s what makes it the person. and I think an androgen person will look androgyn no matter what kind of clothing he/she wears. It’s all about the face/hair/body shape.

What has changed/happened since your last attendance at FASHIONCLASH?
It feels like jumping into a wind turbine. loved every moment of the ride and it’s still continuing.

Why have you decided to participate at FASHIONCLASH Festival once again?
Because they give you a real platform, love the vibes before, during and after the festival. I feels like becoming part of a family. A family that you take care of, that you love and that you treasure.

Q & A with designer MariusVisser

Finding your own voice is difficult, where and how do you find your personal creativity?

My bags are made out of beautiful materials. For me, that’s even more important than the actual bag.

What was the most important thing your parents taught you, that you now bring into your work?
My whole family is into design and architecture/interior. Being open minded is what they taught me.

Leonie & Lois - Spijkerbrij

Meet Leonie & Lois, a brand from Utrecht, the Netherlands.

After individually being titled as stylist, Leonie and Lois met each other 5 years ago at the School of Arts (HKU). They are inspired by each other with their different views on the same projects. Their mutual fascination for crafts and the passion for repurpose waste, results in graduating together with the project Spijkerbrij. In July 2014, they started their own company Leonie & Lois.

How would you describe your work? What is your technique?
To show the whole story and process from waste material to new products we build a portable factory. Our inspiration comes from crafts, by collecting knowledge from craftsman and turn it into a new concept. Spijkerbrij is a result of our visit to the old paper mill in Zaandam, where the still make paper out of old cloth. Instead of making paper of old jeans we wanted to press 3D-products.

"We think it's very important to show how a product is made, and who made it."

Have you shown your collections before? if so, where?
Since last july we have been traveling around with our portable factory. It's great to see such a respond on our project. When we were graduated for only two weeks, our first showcase was at the Modefabriek in Amsterdam. After that we collaborated with stores by doing events together and with schools by giving workshops. In April we were part of the Amsterdam Denim Days and we took our factory international, giving live demonstrations at Salone del Mobile in Milan!
