Foamboy Monsters by Niek Pulles at Comme des Garçons

Designer Niek Pulles installs Foamboy Monsters in Comme des Garçons stores all over the world.
Some of you may remember, the very first Foamboy monster made its debut at FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2011. Niek Pulles was one of the 10 non-fashion designers we invited for our Clash Project. Inspired by material remains of his graduation work 'Architectural Acoustics' in connection to human body Niek created his first Foamboy.

For their seasonal beginning Comme des Garçons asked Dutch design talent Niek Pulles to create 19 ‘Foamboy Monsters' for companies stores.
Originally produced as costumes for dancers and performers at various events including FASHIONCLASH Festival and Tedx. The work finds its influence in the hyperbolic portraits of MC Escher and Oskar Schlemmer’s triadic ballet. Similar to the aforementioned projects, the outfits feature unique, forms that distort the human body as it relates to the space it occupies.
Iindustrial shapes of hexagonal nuts, rigid gears, and round screws have been extruded out of waterjet cut foam to capture shadows, enhance light, and emphasize their depth as they are randomly dispersed around a main emblem placed in the center of the chest. Each of the figures have been decorated in black and grey to complement the label’s color scheme and are posed in a way that contrasts the existing models dressed in the brand’s apparel.
The 19 creations that have resulted from the collaboration are now intertwined with manikins in Tokyo, Kyoto, Paris, New York, and the company’s original store located in London’s Dover Street Market.

Dutch Design Week 2012

Marly van Lipzig
Eindhoven is full of energy this week as Dutch Design Week seems to have taken over the city. FASHIONCLASH loves to visit  DDW because each year we find some amazing young talents and we love it even more when we bump into installations and presentations by FASHIONCLASH participants. Many of them are to be found in the Etalageroute DDW (shopping window route)   through the city: Elvira 't Hart, Annemarije van Harten, Nawie Kuiper, Mirte Engelhard, I am Nold (Natalie de Koning), Lidewij Corstiaans, de l’eefstijl, Marije de Haan, Joelle Boers and so on.
You can find them also in the rest of the program, like Josine Heuts at Modebelofte 2012 or at ABKM stand.

Niek Pulles (HEYNIEK) is responsible for the stunning look and feel of Modebelofte 2012 exhibition.

HEYNIEK by Niek Pulles

Niek at work
Picture from Matandme blog.
What is your name? Niek Pulles

What is the name of your label? HEYNIEK

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I graduated in December 2009 at Man & Identity of the Design Academy Eindhoven

What inspires you as a designer/artist? I think almost everything in life :P If ''it" or "something'' gives you the energy or the feeling to create a piece, that inspires me.

Who is your favorite (fashion) designer/artist? Why? Alexander McQueen and especially what he did around his shows. Creating new worlds, he really was a precursor. It's a shame that he died...

What can you bring to FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I will join the CLASH project and the plan is to show an energetic and experimental piece based on the material of one of my graduation project, which is black foam.

What do you expect from the FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I think it will be an even hotter show the last year :)

How did your experience with fashion started? When did you decide to be a (fashion) designer/artist? I was really triggered by the fastness of fashion during the Academy. In my third year I decided to jump into this fashion adventure at Man & Identity, which I still don't regret!

What are your goals concerning your career? What are your ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future? My plan is to focus on fashion film. Using film to make trend forecasts and visualize (fashion) material experiments. And hope to work with nice people:), but that is already happening...
