ZWYRD at 11th Fashion Week Poland
Last year,
FASHIONCLASH had a pleasure to invite young, Polish designer, who just
debuted at the FashionPhilosophy Fashion
Week. It was first ZWYRD’s collection ever created and ever shown and at once
people fell in love in his masculine and nature-inspired designs. Question was,
if Grzegorz Marcisz, the owner of ZWYRD, will continue his success with his
second collection. And you know what? He did!
Second
collection of ZWYRD focuses on the science fiction theme – Grzegorz’s aim was
to present his own vision of the future. In case of Marcisz, the theme is not a
random words, which are supposed to fill in the catalogue or a press info – the
general destruction of the world, pessimistic image of the future is visible in
his designs. Grzegorz based his colors and hues on very dark cobalt, metallic
silver, greys, black and white. He also included semi-transparent black
materials and colorfull prints, which resembled explosion (matching with the
theme of destruction).
In case of
ZWYRD, it is extremely impressive, that such a young designer (he is actually still a student) creates coherent,
mature and interesting collections. The same goes with the shows themselves –
barely anyone uses metal/rock music to the fashion-shows. We cross our fingers
for ZWYRD and we wish, that this young Polish talent will create many goods for
European fashion.

Saba Tark at Centraal Museum Utrecht
photo: Richard Terborg |
This is the first in a series of exhibitions in which Centraal Museum and HKU (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht) present the work of a promising talent. Each autumn the museum will showcase the work of an art or design graduate from HKU. The series kicks off with Saba Tark (1987, Baghdad), who studied at the MAFAD (Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts) and Design and at HKU. As a young fashion designer from a multicultural background, she is inspired by traditional craftsmanship and experimentation.
Her graduation project Nomads of the World is displayed in the New Utrecht Galleries. The collection is inspired by the fabrics of nomadic people, in which function and beauty are paramount. In this collection, it is as though Saba has created a modern tribe that has fled the hectic nature of everyday life in search of peace, quiet and freedom. In this collection, she has sought a new approach to design that translates craftsmanship and innovation into clothing: she has developed new materials and techniques, adapted design methods and changed silhouettes.

Foamboy Monsters by Niek Pulles at Comme des Garçons
Designer Niek Pulles installs Foamboy Monsters in Comme des Garçons stores all over the world.
Some of you may remember, the very first Foamboy monster made its debut at FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2011. Niek Pulles was one of the 10 non-fashion designers we invited for our Clash Project. Inspired by material remains of his graduation work 'Architectural Acoustics' in connection to human body Niek created his first Foamboy.
For their seasonal beginning Comme des Garçons asked Dutch design talent Niek Pulles to create 19 ‘Foamboy Monsters' for companies stores.
Originally produced as costumes for dancers and performers at various events including FASHIONCLASH Festival and Tedx. The work finds its influence in the hyperbolic portraits of MC Escher and Oskar Schlemmer’s triadic ballet. Similar to the aforementioned projects, the outfits feature unique, forms that distort the human body as it relates to the space it occupies.
Iindustrial shapes of hexagonal nuts, rigid gears, and round screws have been extruded out of waterjet cut foam to capture shadows, enhance light, and emphasize their depth as they are randomly dispersed around a main emblem placed in the center of the chest. Each of the figures have been decorated in black and grey to complement the label’s color scheme and are posed in a way that contrasts the existing models dressed in the brand’s apparel.
The 19 creations that have resulted from the collaboration are now intertwined with manikins in Tokyo, Kyoto, Paris, New York, and the company’s original store located in London’s Dover Street Market.

FASHIONCLASH Cape Town
fitting the prototypes for the costumes |
It's been two week now that we are in Cape Town and time is flying. It has already been exciting time with encounters and 'clashes' and we would have loved it to be able to stay longer.
When we arrived it felt like a trip down memory lane, bringing us back to the roots of FASHIONCLASH. As some may know FASHIONCLASH was initiated after a developing project in Palmeiras township in the Brazilian city Fortaleza. 'FASHIONCLASH Brazil' dates back in 2006/2007 but still remains a source of courage and inspiration to connect people, cultures and artistic disciplines. Ever since Brazil we have been longing to do a project like this again. So here we are in South Africa.
The project in Cape Town is taking place in Langa township, in the Guga 'S Thebe Cultural Centre.
Shortly after our arrival we went to visit the children of the Happy Feet Youth Project in their own neighbourhood and their tiny dance space. This was truly inspiring and touching to be surrounded with so much energy and positive vibes in a place where dreams seems to be far away. The kids also performed for us to show us some of their dances and moves, and sure they can dance! Although Cape Town is a marvellous city with many stunning nature attractions visiting Happy Feet was the highlight so far.
In the following days we managed to do quite a lot, starting with installing of our workspace in Guga 'S Thebe. Furthermore we visited various companies who where so generous to contribute in the project. Show Tex will provide us with fabrics, Cape Town Sewing with sewing machines, Aga with sewing yarns and so on. People are friendly and willing to help. Thanks to all the help and materials we were able to start designing and making prototypes for the costumes and to organize a workshop in the connection to Open Design Festival in the weekend of 16 and 17 of August.
In the meantime we are working on the costumes for the Happy Feet performance during the Fringe Festival in Cape Town in September.

Local talents at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2014
IINUA Joelle Boers & Noir Near Future |
During the 6th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival several local designers presented their work. With 'local' we consider designer from the Euregio Meuse Rhein and lot only designer based in the region but also MAFAD academy alumni or designer born and raised in the region.
To strengthen the regional 'fashion' network and community we have initiated FAB Fashion Across Borders two years ago. FAB is a cooperation with Fashion Museum Hasselt and Designmetropole Aachen.
Next to FAB and FASHIONCLASH another important player in MAFAD, Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design. Majority of local designers are MAFAD alumni.
During the 6th edition of the festival MAFAD fashion graduates presented their collections and also the talented 3rd year students (ABOUT 11) where on display in the fashion show programme.
Furthermore it is very important that Maastricht has various academies, such as the renowned Toneelacademie Maastricht (drama school Maastricht). Each edition students and alumni of the drama academy are participating with 'fashion' related performances.
At the moment city of Maastricht is developing a policy around the concept of 'Mode Maastricht' (Fashion Maastricht). We have always believed in Maastricht's potential but it has to be about supporting the new generation of talents. That is the priority.
So, who are the local/regional talents? Here is a brief overview of some of them.
