FASHIONCLASH Fashion Procession 2011

In cooperation with the Heiligdomsvaart and ABK Maastricht FASHIONCLASH organizes a Fashion Procession, a procession where models are showing the creations of liturgical vestments in a parade through the city of Maastricht and accompanied by live music.

Designers and artists from all disciplines will participate in this unique project.
FASHIONCLASH, Maastricht's youngest event, in cooperation with Heiligdomsvaart, Maastricht's oldest event.

Heiligdomsvaart takes place once in 7 year. This year the 54th edition will take place. The first went through Maastricht in 1391, the last in 2004. In a sanctuary in a procession relics (clothing, objects or remains) of the saints are presented to the people. Heiligdomsvaart Maastricht is the most famous in the Netherlands and attracts many visitors. A rich cultural program of which this year FASHIONCLASH Fashion Procession is a component is composed around the event.
For more info: http://www.heiligdomsvaartmaastricht.nl

The assignment: The liturgical garments and textiles are the starting point for the creations/ designs.

In the treasuries of the great Roman Catholic churches in Maastricht beautiful textiles collections are stored and collected over the centuries. Especially for the participants in this project the church will reveal these treasures so they can serve as inspiration.

Examples include the models of the chasubles, with various fashions (so-called violin casket from Rich Roman life or beautiful Art Deco chasubles). Or the different meanings of the colours of the liturgical clothing (e.g. yellow for Easter and purple for Advent and fasting).

The Fashion Procession is presented on Sunday, June 5th (shopping Sunday) via a route through the city of Maastricht.  In addition, the creations (or a part of the creations) will be presented on the catwalk (during the opening night) and in the exposition of the multidisciplinary fashion event FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011 (10 to June 12).

Images from the lecture/tour.
Historian Jac van den Boogaard gave a lecture / tour around the textiles in the Roman Catholic Church, a special kick-off of the assignment of this project.

FASHIONCLASH Fashion Procession is made possible by Hogeschool Zuyd and BV Limburg / Zicht op Maastricht.

Devout/Divine - Fashion vs Religion at the Fashion Museum of Hasselt (MHM)

FASHIONCLASH is glad to mention that close to Maastricht there is a very fine fashion museum, the Fashion Museum of Hasselt (MHM)!
If you are having some spare time or if you want to do some cultural activities during the holidays than we have a tip for you: The exhibition "Devout/Divine - Fashion vs. Religion" is open until the 9th of January 2011.

Here's a blog post by BRANKOPOPOVICBLOG: http://brankopopovic.blogspot.com/2010/12/devoutdivine-fashion-vs-religion-at-mmh.html

From the 26th of June 2010 until the 9th of January the Fashion Museum of Hasselt (MMH) is under the spell of religion with the exhibition Devout/Divine - Fashion vs. Religion. This expo doesn't show a traditional overview of historical religious garments and textile, but focuses on the relationship between contemporary fashion and religion. More specifically, the integration and translation of religious symbolism from the five major world religions in designs of the past decennia will be emphasized.
Original interpretations of burqa's, a praying carpet transformed into a handbag, habits remodelled as catwalk ensembles and Haute Couture nuns are just a few examples.

Devout/Divine - Fashion vs. Religion is a compilation of creations of national and international designers. The expo examines how religion is integrated in their work. Should this adaptation be considered as an expression of a religious view, a testimony of a civil or social framework, a ritual statement, or is it pure aesthetic?

Participants: Rick Owens, Walter Van Beirendonck, M F Girbaud, Mada Van Gaans, Bernhard Willhelm, JP Gaultier, John Richmond, A.F. Vandevorst, Giambattista Valli, Raf Simons, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, Todd Lynn, Manish Arora, Sabijn Peters and many others.
Coordinator: Kenneth Ramaekers /Research: Eve Demoen / Scenography: Michaël Verheyden / Grafical design: Geoffrey Brusatto /In cooperation with the institution of integration Hasselt.

Here's also a blog link (post by BRANKOPOPOVICBLOG) about one of their succesful exhibition " UltraMegaLore - Hanelore Knuts": http://brankopopovic.blogspot.com/2010/04/ultra-mega-lore-hanelore-knuts.html

UltraMegaLore poster was recently awarded with the audience award for the Power of Print 2010, the competition in Belguim for promotional posters and flyers in the cultural sector.
