Georgia Xanthe Dorey

Georgia Xanthe Dorey is an English textile designer. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2013 with an MA in printed textiles.

Hello, Georgia! Where are you based?
I live between London and the rural English countryside where my studio is based.

What inspires you in general?
Day-to-day use of texture, colour, shape and combinations that I see all around me.

What is it like to be a young artist in your country?
Exciting, hard and lonely.

What attracts you about the FASHIONCLASH platform?
That it represents an exciting moment in a designer’s career. The work on show has not lost its sense of excitement; the FASHIONCLASH platform captures new ideas and a new way of thinking.

The FASHIONCLASH Exhibition is curated under the theme of ‘Age’. How does your creation relate to this year’s theme?
‘Wrap’ is a series of cloths suitable for wrapping all manner of bodies, ages and objects, which provide protection and adornment. My work is an exploration into the human relationship with cloth and shape. Each cloth can be interpreted by the individual, regardless of age, gender or ability; each cloth can function in a unique way brought to life by the individual.

Where are you based?
I am based in London, both myself and my studio.

What inspires you in general?
Anything ranging from a pattern on the street to furniture and architecture can inspire me. Mostly, I love to explore and combine different materials and creating interesting tactile and visual surfaces and construction.

What is it like to be a young designer in your city?
Not very easy, I believe that at the moment nowhere is easy to be a young designer. London is a great city for inspiration which loves what is new and innovative, so I take comfort in that at times of struggle.

Joshua Enker Presents New Collection

Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
My name is Joshua Enker, I am a fashion designer from Amsterdam. I design for both men and women and I tend to start from material development.

What inspires you in general?
Fashion, art, history, crafts...the idea of transformation and how one is perceived.

Where are you based?
I’m based in Amsterdam, for now.

What is it like to be a young designer in your city/country?
There’s a whole web of institutions, subsidies, etc. that seem to support fashion, however it’s quite daunting to find your way through it though. Selling and actually producing your work is a big challenge, as there is hardly a market for home-grown design. The Dutch will spend on their homes but not on clothing and accessories.

Aimee Matthew-John: Integrating female and male attributes into fashion

Please introduce yourself:
Aimee Matthew-John, from Milton Keynes, specialising in Womenswear.

What inspires you in general?
One of the most interesting things for me is talking to people with stories to tell. I love to listen to tales of travels and experiences and to see the ways in which these things have informed a person’s style or outlook.
I’m fascinated by the idea of clothing as disguise- becoming something/someone else by stepping into a garment or outfit, choosing a character to wear each day.
And clothing that builds history, memories, meaning over time.
Fashion aside; artisan bakers.

Where are you based?
In London

What is it like to be a young designer in your city/country?
Perhaps the best thing is having so many people around to work with, go over ideas with, be motivated by... There are many creatives and opportunities to collaborate as well as resources and inspiration. Most encouragingly, people are excited by design and want to see what you have to offer.
In professional terms, again, there are plenty of places to start however it is demanding and difficult to sustain yourself. It can be hard to sustain a business in fashion for several reasons- keeping up with the rate of consumption and expectation, competition with larger players on the highstreet who are able to produce 'cheaper'/ faster clothing, as well as contending with the widespread perception of ‘value’. I think that designers have to try to spread an appreciation for skilled work and clothing that will last beyond trends.

Multidisciplinary Exhibition Presented by Lisa Maria Rutten

Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)

I’m Lisa Maria Rutten, I work under the name: Maria-Lies, I graduated as an illustrator, but photography and fashion are a big influence in my work. My work is mainly about creating a certain atmosphere, which mostly ends up as a surreal situation. I prefer to put things in another perspective, playing with the function and use of objects is distinctive for my work. By illustrating with objects, I try to create a set-design that makes people question. Photography is the main key in all of this, however I often combine more mixed media techniques, since I haven’t lost my love for working with real materials. My style consists of creating an illusion, with a dark sense of humor and an overload of imagination.

Meet fashion designer Maddalena Mangialavori

Please introduce yourself: My name is Maddalena Mangialavori and I'm a young Italian fashion designer. I've always had an inexplicable but visceral passion for fashion, and after my BA in fashion design in Florence I decided it was time for me to do a more "international" experience. So I came to London. I just graduated at a Master Level, after 17 months of hard work, in Fashion Design Technology at London College of Fashion.

What inspires you in general? I'm a traveller. I've always been since I was a kid, and I'm used to absorb as much as I can from the places I visit, from different cultures, different traditions. I would say inspiration comes from opening yourself to a certain reality and let some of that reality touch your chords. But inspiration is just the beginning of a journey, it just points me a direction and once I find it I usually spend a loooot of time researching and digging on a certain topic, and THAT really feeds my creativity.

Where are you based? I now divide myself between London and Italy.

“The feMALE” by Hyerim Hong

1. Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
My name is Hyerim Hong but my friends call me Rim. I’m from Seoul, Korea. I used to study business and work in the business field. However I really wanted to I changed it to fashion. I finished my master’s degree in Fashion design technology – woman’s wear- in London at the College of Fashion. I like tailoring, textile and handcrafted work as I’ve done in this collection.

2. Can you talk us through the concept of your collection?
This collection is a story of a girl, H. It followed the girl H’s changes from interactions with different types of men. The designs are mixed. Not only her self’s traits but also individual male traits are incorporated into the collection. This is the reason why the title is not a female but The feMALE.
