FabricAge Exhibition

On Sunday, 10th September during Parcours Maastricht, FabricAge unveiled the first textile creations with an exhibition at Mosae Forum in Maastricht. The exhibition is open until 24 September.

The textile creations are designed by five fashion designers, six experienced crafts buddies, and made my more than 150 seniors during 250 hours. The starting point for the design was the city of Maastricht; the different neighborhoods and the diversity of inhabitants, but also the power of connection and cohesion. The five designers are Maarten van Mulken, Verena Klein, Ebby Port, IXX Jolijn Fiddelaers and Suzanne Vaessen (Strikks).

FabricAge
Following the success of last year’s project LET'S (AD)DRESS THE PEOPLE (1 June-3 July, 2016) FASHIONCLASH and stichting Tout Maastricht joined forces again to transform this multidisciplinary social design project into a sustainable and distinctive textile product & label: FabricAge. The objective of FASHIONCLASH and Tout Maastricht is to establish a unique fabric design label which emphasizes on the active participation of the elderly and traditional crafts, bringing together the arts and crafts of textile design with the tangible and intangible heritage of our culture.FabricAge facilitates communities of all ages to come together, to connect through creativity, to gain meaning and to become visible to society.

FabricAge develops high-end one-of-a-kind textile designs, based on the wishes and preferences of clients, visualized by talented designers, crafted by experts, and collectively created by the senior community. Each design and process are tailor-made, giving participants the opportunity to be part of a challenging, educational, social and creative experience, and enabling them to contribute to a unique end result. This can range from an outspoken textile art object to an eye-catching wall decor.

LET’S (AD)DRESS THE PEOPLE!

LET’S (AD)DRESS THE PEOPLE! is a new multidisciplinary social design project based around traditional craft techniques and participation of particularly elderly. The project is developed in context of the FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016 theme Heritage and will take place at Centre Céramique, Coffeelovers and Plein 1992 in Maastricht.

In the project the process is as important as the end result. This process of handicrafting within a team contributes to encounter, dialogue and sharing of knowledge. The project brings together the arts and crafts of fashion and textile design with the tangible and intangible heritage of our popular culture.

Designers Floor Nijdeken, Jolijn Fiddelaers of IXX Creates and Maartje Boer and Suzanne Vaessen of STRIKKS will work in teams with experienced craft buddies and elderly participnats with purpose to co-create new textile designs. The public space of Centre Céramique will temporary be transformed into a pop-up workshop where all teams will work together.

kick off encounter with designers at Plein 1992

The final presentation of the project will take place June 30 – July 3 during FASHIONCLASH Festival at Plein 1992, which will be temporarily transformed into a craft square. Everyone is invited to observe but also to take part with one of the teams and co-create!

LET’S (AD)DRESS THE PEOPLE! is an initiative of FASHIONCLASH in cooperation with Tout Maastricht. LET’S (AD)DRESS THE PEOPLE! is made possible thanks to generous support by Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie, Gemeente Maastricht, Stichting Elisabeth Strouven, Coffeelovers and Centre Céramique.

(OLD)Fashion(ed) Introduction

Last week, we came together at Museum aan het Vrijthof for (OLD)Fashion(ed) introduction and meeting with crafts men and women. It was an inspiring encounter with experienced artisans who are all eager to take part in this special project.

(OLD)Fashion(ed) is a collaboration with the Dutch Dance Festival and Museum aan het Vrijthof.
In this project, experienced crafts women and men share their knowledge with young fashion designers. The collection, worn by models of 65 years and older and presented with dance performances by renowned choreographers, will be on display during FASHIONCLASH Festival and the Dutch Dance Festival (October 2014). The project concludes with a special exhibition at the Museum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht.
The exhibition displays the costumes and video's from (OLD)Fashion(ed) project, and will provide sights to the personal lives of the involved artisans.

Joshua Enker Presents New Collection

Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
My name is Joshua Enker, I am a fashion designer from Amsterdam. I design for both men and women and I tend to start from material development.

What inspires you in general?
Fashion, art, history, crafts...the idea of transformation and how one is perceived.

Where are you based?
I’m based in Amsterdam, for now.

What is it like to be a young designer in your city/country?
There’s a whole web of institutions, subsidies, etc. that seem to support fashion, however it’s quite daunting to find your way through it though. Selling and actually producing your work is a big challenge, as there is hardly a market for home-grown design. The Dutch will spend on their homes but not on clothing and accessories.
