Highlights from the 27th Amsterdam Fashion Week

27th edition of Amsterdam Fashion Week took place from July 13 - 16 at the Westergasfabriek.
The mostly dominated by young designers and new comers the schedule contained many fresh shows and fresh proposals.

FASHIONCLASH attended several shows, among them there where presentations by some FASHIONCLASH talents such as Juliette Heijnen who showed her 'No Phobia' collection at FASHIONCLASH Festival two weeks ago.

The fashion week was opened with a intriguing presentation by the bespoke Das Leben Am Haverkamp collective.
Following there was a beautiful presentation by Barbara Langendijk in collaboration with Noon Passama. Other successful proposals where by M.E.N., Klaudia Stavreva, Liesbeth Sterrenburg and Maison the Faux.

Next to the show one of the highlights was the Future Generation Utopia exhibition curated by Peter Leferink. This exhibition featured installations by Marlou Breuls, Sunna Chandry Koning, Karlijne Opmeer, Pleun van Dijk and Lotte van Dijk with her Atelier project. Lotte was one of the finalists at the Hyères Festival this year.

The summer edition is known for Lichting show, 14 best graduates of the fashion academies in the Netherlands are selected to show their collections. Lizzy Stuyfzand won the jury prize, and Sarah Bruylant won the public award. Karlijn Krijger and Lise van Wetten where selected to represent  MAFAD, the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design.

FASHION VS. ART expo at SCHUNCK

A multidisciplinary exhibition that questions the relationship between fashion and art. Curated by FASHIONCLASH and organized in collaboration with SCHUNCK*.

Fashion occupies a prominent position in our contemporary culture and is one of the largest industries in the world. But is it art?
The status of fashion within the art sphere is an everlasting subject of debate. There are legendary designers who identified themselves as artists such as Elsa Schiaparelli, who declared in her autobiography that she considers fashion design not as “a profession, but as an art.” Nowadays many prominent designers such as Martin Margiela, Miuccia Prada, Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs reject this statement.

“My designs are based on my paintings. The paintings and the fashion go hand in hand. I get inspired by the way of thinking and moving of our society, I want to translate this into my textiles and paintings” – Jade van der Mark

Within the academic sphere and the world of young designers there are many examples of cross-overs with art and autonomous approaches to fashion as a form of art. The multidisciplinary FASHION VS. ART exhibition displays a selection of work by fashion designers who in their own practice question and challenge the boundaries of fashion as a form of art. With their playful and innovative approach to fashion they stimulate our imaginary world and question our perception. Ask yourself: Is it art or is it fashion?

The ‘clash’ in FASHIONCLASH represents the encounter between cultures, artistic disciplines, audience and fashion. FASHIONCLASH believes that the art of fashion can stimulate critical debate about the role of fashion within our society and the world of art.
FASHIONCLASH presents the art of fashion not only by scouting outspoken avant-garde designers and providing a platform for upcoming talent, but also by organizing cross-over projects such as the CLASH project. Since the first edition in 2009 the CLASH Project challenges every year ten artists and designers from different artistic disciplines (all non-fashion) to transform their practice, both materially and conceptually, into a ‘wearable’ fashion outfit, that can be presented on the catwalk during FASHIONCLASH Festival. The perfect opportunity for creative minds to step out of their comfort zone, to play and experiment!

ARTS THREAD Tomorrows Talent at On|Off LFW SS17

On|Off and ARTS THREAD came together for the second season running to show 10 talented ARTS THREAD members to show as part of #TomorrowsTalent, a slot on the On|Off London Fashion Week SS17 schedule for a static installation curated under the theme of Digital Impressionists.

Among the talents was one of FASHIONCLASH Festival talents Marlou Breuls, who graduated from Amfi this summer and who was the winner of Audience Award at Lichting 2016.
Other featured talents were: Stefan Kartchev, Yeojin Kim, Amanda Svart, Jennifer Dols, Mao Tsen Chang and Laetitia Berthier.

As part of its ongoing dedication to the emerging category, On|Off supports ‘Tomorrow’s Talent’. Tomorrow’s Talent is a full day of activities featuring the very best of international degree and post-graduate talents. The event kicked off on the eve of London Fashion Week, on This will all happen side by side with a whole schedule of catwalk & static presentations across London Fashion Week.
Lee Lapthorne says: “I wanted to offer a platform for the recent graduate category, to really give them a showcase on an international basis. A different perspective. Something original. I’m hoping this will be the start of something very exciting…”

All lights on Marlou Breuls

FASHIONCLASH shines lights on designer Marlou Breuls on RTL 4 programme 'Puur Geluk'

For the visitors of Show 5 at this years FASHIONCLASH Festival it was perhaps a strange moment when one more collection, that was not scheduled, came out on the runway. For Marlou Breuls the shock was even bigger, while she thought her surprise was to sit with her mother and boyfriend on the first raw, she was stunned when she saw a model wearing one of her outfits on the runway. And another two models, until the fourth model, the Dutch top model Kim Feenstra came out and walked towards her.
But the surprise did not end here, Marlou was not aware that everything was filmed with hidden camera's for the Dutch RTL4 tv show 'Puur Geluk'.
The aim of the show was to put one promising designer in the spotlight. We choose to put spotlight on Marlou Breuls, talented fashion student at AMFI institute in Amsterdam. She is talented, hardworking and modest and the pleasure is on us to give her the stage.

Marlou Breuls presents “Revēlātiō”

1. Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?) 
My name is Marlou Breuls. I’m 20 and I’m living in a small village, called Elsloo (nearby Maastricht). This summer I’ll hopefully be a graduate of the ROC Tilburg in Fashion design. Presently, I am waiting strained for the result of my admission for AMFI (Amsterdam Fashion Institute). 

2. Tell us a little bit about the concept behind your collection “Revēlātiō”. 
My collection is based on the Apocalypse. “Revēlātiō” is Latin for the end of times. Trying to expose beauty in an image of war, hunger and death. The most common explanation of apocalypse, particularly in religious texts, points at the end of the earth. In the title of the final book of the New Testament – Revelation, we also find a reference towards this latter meaning which it is generally interpreted as the downfall of human civilization and/or the Earth. In Revelation it becomes clear that it is about the four horsemen of the Apocalypse: victory is followed by war, hunger and death.
