'In Performance - Building a Theatre' at Cape Town Fringe

'In Performance - Building a Theatre' project on display during Cape Town Fringe Festival. In the meantime the new children's theatre next to Guga S'Thebe is getting its shape.

'In Performance - Building a Theatre'

Architecture students from Germany, South Africa, and the United States join forces with the local community to build a new venue for performing arts in Langa. The new building provides a place for the community to share their vibrant culture and to celebrate the arts. The young dancers of the Happy Feet Youth Project introduce the Guga S’Thebe Theatre to spectators by exploring dimensionality, sound, and atmospheric presence through the art of dancing in the newly built space for the first time.
In Performance – Building Theatre investigates two methods of building space: one through making with physical materials; and the other through movement and rhythm. Performed by Happy Feet Youth Project (Langa)

Costumes: FASHIONCLASH (Maastricht)
Textile Scenery: IXX creates (Amsterdam)
Choreography: Nathi Gigaba (Langa), Siviwe Mbinda (Langa), Saskia Oidtmann (Berlin)
Initiative: Nora Elisabeth Müller (Berlin) Building Design: RWTH Aachen University/ Peter Behrens School of Architecture, University of Applied Sciences/ Georgia Institute Of Technology/ CS Studio, Carin Smuts (Cape Town)
Project supported by: Creative Industries Fund NL, Showtex (Cape Town), Capetown Sewing

Multi talented Dennis Vanderbroeck

Dennis Vanderbroeck is a 23 years old designer who now lives in Rotterdam and studies in Maastricht. At this moment He is graduating from the theatre academy, performance art. In his work, he is trying to create cross-overs between fashion, fine art and performance using video, photography and live performance. With his "childish" way of approaching it he create hyper-esthetical and humorous images.

Introducing Dennis Vanderbroeck

1. Please introduce yourself to our readers. (Who are you, where do you come from and what is your field of specialization?)
My name is Dennis Vanderbroeck. I’m 22 and I’m currently living in Maastricht but originally I’m from Zoetermeer, a small village kind-a-thing near Den Haag.
I’m studying performance art at the Theatre Academy here in Maastricht, which, for me, is a combination of theatre and fine arts. In my work I’m trying to create cross-overs between my fascinations, such as fashion, fine arts, video and theatre.

Karel van Laere

What is your name? Karel van Laere
Where did you study and when did you graduate? I am currently in my 3rd year of Theatrical Performance at the theatre school in Maastricht and will graduate next year.
What inspires you as a theater maker/performer? The New Media is always a huge inspiration. Its endless possibilities.
Who is your favorite artist? Why? Hussein Chalayan is one of my favorite fashion artists. In my opinion he thinks more like a performer than like a fashion designer. Plus his shows can definitely be considered performances. I also love the way he uses the new media in his designs.
Another artist who inspires me is the sound artist: Alva Noto. His sounds and videos are mostly based on things that could go wrong in a computer.
